Chapter 6 - The Gathering Storm

For three days, the Mercer Island estate became an island out of time.
Dante spent every waking moment with Mia. He sat on the rug teaching her how to play chess, listened to her endless stories about Moonlight the racehorse, and helped her build massive LEGO castles in the sunroom. Watching the formidable crime boss—a man feared across the entire Pacific Northwest—humbly sit on the floor wearing a pink plastic tiara while Mia painted his fingernails was a sight that made Claire’s heart ache with a strange, overwhelming warmth.
The ice between Claire and Dante began to melt, replaced by a quiet, deep understanding. They sat together on the terrace at night after Mia fell asleep, talking late into the evening about the six lost years.
"I never married," Dante said quietly one evening, watching the stars reflected on the lake. "There was never anyone else, Claire. Only you."
Claire looked down at her hands. "I didn't date either. I was too busy... and too afraid to open my heart again."
Dante reached out, his warm, scarred fingers gently taking hers. "I want to fix this, Claire. I want to give you and Mia everything I stole from you."
"Dante," Claire said softly, looking into his eyes. "You can't give us anything until this war is over. Sal Falcone is still out there."
Dante’s expression hardened, the gentle father instantly vanishing behind the eyes of a lethal predator.
"Sal Falcone's time is up," Dante said coldly.
The next morning, the storm broke.
Dominic arrived at the estate at 7:00 AM with five capos. A mole inside the Falcone organization had finally provided the location of Sal Falcone’s primary base of operations—an abandoned fish processing plant on the docks of South Seattle.
"Sal is gathering forty men," Dominic reported in the private war room. "He knows Dante is alive. He’s planning a full assault on this estate tonight."
Dante stood over a tactical map of the docks, his left arm out of its sling, a heavy black Sig Sauer pistol resting on the table.
"We don't let him come here," Dante said, his voice dropping into iron granite. "My daughter is in this house. We hit him at the docks in two hours. We end this today."
Claire stood at the doorway of the war room, watching him.
When the capos left to prepare the strike team, Dante walked over to Claire. He pulled a sleek, encrypted satellite phone from his pocket and placed it in her hand.
"Vance and twenty men are staying here to guard you and Mia," Dante said softly, taking her face in his hands. "If anything happens to me... Vance has instructions to take you both to a estate in Switzerland. You will be safe, and you will be wealthy for the rest of your lives."
Claire grabbed his leather jacket, pulling him down until their faces were inches apart.
"Don't you dare talk about dying, Dante Moretti!" she shouted, tears shining in her eyes. "You just found your daughter! You just found me! You come back to us, do you hear me?! You come home!"
Dante looked at her, his dark eyes ablaze with an ancient, fiery passion.
Without a word, he leaned down and kissed her—a deep, fierce, desperate kiss that tasted of rain, salt tears, and six years of suppressed longing.

Claire kissed him back with everything she had, wrapping her arms around his neck, holding him as if she could tether him to the earth.
When he pulled away, he touched her cheek softly. "I will come home, Claire. I promise."
