Chapter 2 - A Sweet Invasion

Three days passed. To Claire’s immense relief, the silent, terrifying men in dark coats did not return to sit in her dining area. Her regular customers gradually drifted back, but the dark cloud of financial ruin remained heavy over her head.

It was a rainy Thursday afternoon when the bell above the door chimed again.

Claire emerged from the back kitchen with a tray of fresh cinnamon rolls, wiping sweat from her forehead with her apron. She froze.

Sitting at a corner table was Eleanor Vance, looking pristine in a plum-colored wool coat, her silver hair styled impeccably. Beside her sat little Lily, wearing a bright yellow raincoat and clutching her stuffed doll, Rosie. Sitting across from them, looking entirely too large for the small wooden chair, was Gabriel Vance, dressed in a charcoal sweater and dark trousers.

"Good afternoon, Claire," Eleanor said warmly, her eyes crinkling with genuine affection.

"Mama Claire!" Lily chirped, waving her small hand enthusiastically.

Claire nearly dropped the hot tray of cinnamon rolls. "Lily... Mrs. Vance. What are you doing here?"

"We came for tea," Eleanor said simply, as if it were the most natural thing in the world. "And Gabriel wanted to apologize for his atrocious manners on Tuesday."

Gabriel looked remarkably uncomfortable. A man who commanded thousands of soldiers and controlled a multi-billion-dollar empire was currently sitting in a small bakery, forced by his mother to apologize to a woman he had offended.

"I am... sorry, Miss Whitmore," Gabriel said, his voice low, his dark eyes meeting hers with undeniable sincerity. "My approach was clumsy. I am accustomed to solving problems with money. I did not mean to disrespect your kindness."

Claire looked at the giant man, then at the smiling grandmother and the eager little girl. The anger she had been holding onto melted away, replaced by a warm, bubbling amusement.

"Apology accepted, Mr. Vance," Claire said, setting the tray down behind the counter and bringing over three plates and a teapot. "Though if you want to make it up to me, you'll have to eat one of these cinnamon rolls. They're still hot."

Ten minutes later, the strange group was sitting together. Lily was happily smearing icing over her nose, Eleanor was enjoying a cup of Earl Grey, and Gabriel Vance was taking a slow bite of a cinnamon roll.

Claire watched him nervously. Baking was her life, her art, her pride.

Gabriel paused as he chewed. His eyes widened slightly. He swallowed and looked down at the pastry as if it held a secret equation. "This is... incredible," he admitted, looking up at Claire. "I haven't tasted food like this since I was a child in Italy."

"It's my grandmother's recipe," Claire said, a soft flush of pride warming her cheeks. "Lots of butter, patience, and a little bit of nutmeg."

"It's magic," Lily chimed in, wiping her mouth with a napkin. "Daddy, can we come here every day?"

Gabriel looked at his daughter, his expression softening into a look of such tenderness that Claire felt a sudden squeeze in her chest. The cold, ruthless mafia boss vanished, leaving behind a grieving father who adored his child.

"If Miss Whitmore allows it, sweetheart," Gabriel said softly.

As Eleanor and Lily chatted about school and toys, Gabriel leaned closer to Claire, his deep voice meant only for her ears. "My security team did a routine background check on your business after Tuesday, Claire. I know about the bank notice."

Claire’s smile faltered, her posture stiffening. "I told you, Mr. Vance, I don't want your charity."

"It isn't charity," Gabriel said firmly, his gaze locking onto hers. "I run five major hotels in the city. The pastry vendor we currently contract with is terrible. I want to hire Whitmore’s Bakery as the exclusive pastry supplier for the Vance Hotel Group."

Claire gasped, her hand flying to her chest. "Gabriel... that's... that's a massive contract. My little kitchen can't handle that kind of volume!"

"Then I will fund the expansion of your kitchen," Gabriel replied smoothly. "Not as a gift, but as an advance on your contract earnings. You will earn every single penny, Claire. Do not let your pride destroy your dream."

Claire looked into his eyes, searching for any sign of pity or hidden motives. She found none—only respect, belief, and a quiet promise of protection.

"Why are you doing this?" she whispered.

Gabriel reached out, his large, warm fingers briefly brushing against her knuckles on the tabletop, sending a wave of heat through her skin. "Because when my mother and daughter were lost in the freezing rain, you gave them your scarf and your time without asking for a thing. People like you are rare, Claire Whitmore. The world shouldn't be allowed to break you."
