Chapter 3 - A Taste of Danger

With the advance from the hotel contract, Whitmore’s Bakery was saved. Over the next two weeks, contractors hired by Gabriel expanded Claire’s back kitchen, installing commercial ovens, stainless steel counters, and state-of-the-art refrigerators.
During those two weeks, Gabriel Vance became a permanent fixture in Claire’s life.
He didn't just send his men; he showed up himself almost every evening. Sometimes he came alone after a long day of high-stakes negotiations, sitting quietly in the back corner, drinking black coffee while watching Claire work. Other times, he brought Lily, who insisted on sitting on a high stool beside Claire, learning how to roll dough and shape cookies.
Claire, who had spent years feeling invisible due to her full figure and quiet lifestyle, suddenly felt intensely seen. Gabriel looked at her soft curves, her warm brown eyes, and her flour-dusted hair not with judgment, but with an intense, dark hunger that made her pulse race whenever he was near.
One rainy Tuesday evening, the bakery was closed. The staff had gone home, and Claire was alone in the back kitchen, putting the finishing touches on a massive six-tier wedding cake ordered by a wealthy socialite.
The front door chimed. Claire wiped her hands on her apron and walked out to the front shop, expecting to see Gabriel.
Instead, three men stood inside the doorway.
They weren't dressed like Gabriel’s clean, disciplined security team. They wore heavy leather jackets, smelled strongly of cheap cigars and wet alcohol, and carried an aura of crude, violent aggression. The leader was a stocky man with a broken nose and a greasy ponytail.
"Can I help you?" Claire asked cautiously, her hand subtly reaching beneath the counter toward the emergency alarm button Gabriel had installed.
"You the owner?" the stocky man asked, stepping forward, his muddy boots leaving tracks on her clean floor. "Claire Whitmore?"
"I am. We're closed for the evening."
"We know who you are," the man sneered, taking another step closer. "You're the baker girl who's been real cozy with Gabriel Vance lately. Word on the street is Vance cares a lot about what happens in this little shop."
Claire’s blood ran cold. "I don't know what you're talking about. Please leave, or I'll call the police."
The man laughed, a harsh, grating sound. He reached into his coat and pulled out a heavy metal pipe. "The police don't run the Southside, sweetheart. The Marcone family does. Tell Vance that if he doesn't sign over the shipping docks at Pier 19 by Friday, his pretty little baker is going to have her hands broken."
He raised the iron pipe, aiming it squarely at the glass display case holding her morning pastries.
"I wouldn't do that if I were you," a deadly, ice-cold voice echoed from the dark doorway behind them.
The three men spun around.
Gabriel Vance stood in the entrance. He wasn't wearing his suit jacket—only a black dress shirt with the sleeves rolled up to his forearms, revealing thick, corded muscle and a dark tattoo of a roaring lion wrapped around his right wrist. Behind him stood Marcus and two other guards, their hands resting inside their coats.
The stocky man’s confidence withered in an instant. "Vance... we were just delivering a message from Marcone."
Gabriel stepped into the room. He didn't run; he walked with the slow, terrifying momentum of an apex predator. He didn't even look at the three men as he bypassed them, walking straight to Claire, placing a massive, protective hand on the small of her back.
"Are you hurt, Claire?" Gabriel asked softly, his tone completely different from the lethal edge in his voice a second ago.
"I'm... I'm okay," Claire whispered, her heart hammering against her ribs.
Gabriel turned back to the three men. His dark eyes were devoid of all humanity—pure, black glass.
"You brought iron into her shop," Gabriel rasped quietly. "You threatened a woman who has nothing to do with our war."
"Vance, wait—" the leader began, backing away.
In a move so fast Claire’s eyes could barely register it, Gabriel closed the distance. He grabbed the leader by his collar, slammed him violently against the brick wall, and disarmed the metal pipe with a single twist of his wrist that resulted in a sickening crack of bone.
The man screamed in agony. The other two thugs tried to draw weapons, but Marcus and Gabriel’s guards had them pinned to the floor in seconds.

Gabriel leaned down to the leader’s ear, his voice a lethal whisper that chilled the entire room. "Tell Marcone that if his men ever look at this street again, I will tear his family out of this city by the roots. Now get out."
Gabriel threw the man toward the door. The three thugs scrambled out into the rain like beaten dogs, leaving a silence so heavy that Claire could hear her own frantic breathing.
