Chapter 4 - The Mark of Protection

Gabriel stood in the middle of the shop, his chest heaving slightly. He closed his eyes, taking a long, deep breath to regain his discipline before he turned back to Claire.

When he looked at her, his expression was filled with a rare, raw guilt.

"I brought this to your door," Gabriel said softly, stepping closer to her. "My world... my enemies. They saw me visiting you. They saw how much time I spent here, and they thought you were a weak point they could exploit."

Claire looked at the giant man standing before her. She saw the lethal killer he was forced to be to survive in his world, but she also saw the overwhelming instinct he had to protect those he cared about.

"Are they going to come back?" Claire asked quietly.

"Never," Gabriel swore, his eyes burning with absolute certainty. "Marcone is a coward who tests boundaries. He knows now that touching you means absolute war."

He reached out, his hand hesitating in mid-air before he gently cupped her cheek. His thumb brushed over her soft cheekbone, his skin warm and rough against hers. "I am so sorry, Claire. I should have kept my distance. I should have protected you from afar."

Claire leaned into his touch without thinking, her eyes fluttering shut for a brief second. "I don't want you to keep your distance, Gabriel."

Gabriel’s breath hitched. "Claire... I am a dangerous man. A dark man."

"You're a good man who protects his family," Claire corrected, looking up into his dark eyes with fierce conviction. "You saved my business. You protected me tonight. Don't walk away now because you're afraid of your own shadows."

Gabriel’s hand tightened gently on her cheek, his gaze falling to her full, rosy lips. For a terrifyingly sweet second, Claire thought he was going to kiss her. The heat between them was unbearable, a magnetic pull that threatened to consume them both.

Instead, Gabriel pressed his forehead gently against hers, taking a long, ragged breath. "You deserve a peaceful life, Claire Whitmore. A life full of sugar, laughter, and sunlight. Not blood and iron."

"Let me decide what I deserve," Claire whispered back.

The next morning, two permanent guards in crisp suits stood discreetly on either side of Whitmore’s Bakery. But they weren't there to scare customers; they were there as a royal guard. Word spread like wildfire through the city’s underground: Claire Whitmore is under the personal protection of Gabriel Vance. Touch her, and die.

Three days later, an engraved, heavy cream card arrived at the bakery.

Miss Claire Whitmore, You are cordially invited to the Annual Vance Foundation Gala at the Grand Horizon Estate. Saturday at 7:00 PM.

Attached to the card was a note in Gabriel’s sharp, elegant handwriting: I would be honored if you would attend as my guest. A car will pick you up. If you say no, I will understand.

Claire held the invitation against her chest, her heart soaring. She wasn't a socialite. She didn't belong in ballrooms. But looking at the invitation, she knew she was done hiding in her kitchen.
