Chapter 7 - The Siege of Grand Horizon

Red emergency lights flickered on along the perimeter of the ballroom, casting long, bloody shadows across the room as guests scrambled toward the main exits.
Heavy gunfire echoed from the front courtyard—the sharp, violent bursts of automatic rifles shattering the glass of the high arched windows.
Gabriel led Claire through a private service door behind the stage, moving with terrifying speed through the dark hallways of the mansion. His guards fell into formation around them, weapons drawn, clearing every corridor before Gabriel moved.
"Where are we going?" Claire asked, running alongside him, her velvet dress rustling against the stone floors.
"The secure wing," Gabriel said grimly. "My mother and daughter are already inside. Once you are safe, I will handle Marcone’s men."
They reached a heavy, reinforced steel door concealed behind a silk tapestry in the library. Marcus was standing guard, keying in an encrypted code into a digital keypad.
The heavy steel door slid open with a deep hydraulic hiss, revealing a brightly lit, luxurious room equipped with medical supplies, monitors, and security feeds. Inside, Eleanor was holding a crying Lily.
"Mama Claire!" Lily sobbed, reaching out her small arms.
Claire ran inside, pulling the little girl into her arms and holding her tight against her heart. "I'm here, sweetie. You're safe."
Gabriel stood in the doorway, looking into the room. His face was set in cold, uncompromising stone. He pulled an extra magazine from his belt and slapped it into his pistol with a sharp, lethal clack.
"Stay inside," Gabriel commanded Marcus. "Lock the door from the inside. Do not open it for anyone except me."
Claire looked up, her stomach twisting into a painful knot as she saw Gabriel preparing to step back out into the warzone. She handed Lily to Eleanor and rushed to the doorway, grabbing Gabriel’s sleeve.
"Gabriel, wait!" Claire cried out. "Don't go!"
Gabriel stopped, turning to look at her. The lethal killer vanished from his eyes for a split second, replaced by a look of profound, agonizing tenderness.
"I have to end this, Claire," Gabriel said softly. "Marcone and his brother think they can attack my home. If I do not crush them tonight, they will never stop coming for you, for Lily, or for my mother."
"Promise me you'll come back," Claire demanded, tears brimming in her eyes, her hand tightening on his coat. "Promise me!"
Gabriel reached out, his large, calloused hand wrapping around the back of her neck. He pulled her forward and pressed his lips to hers in a fierce, possessive, intoxicating kiss that tasted of rain, fire, and absolute devotion.
Claire gasped against his mouth, her arms flying around his neck, kissing him back with everything she had in her soul.
When he pulled back, both of them were breathing heavily, their eyes locked in an unwritten vow.

"I will always come back to you, Claire," Gabriel whispered against her lips. "Lock the door."
He stepped back. The heavy steel door slid shut, locking them inside, leaving Claire standing in the silence of the vault, praying for the man who had stolen her heart.
