Chapter 4 - The Courtroom Battle

The Manhattan Family Court building was cold, gray, and oppressive. Rainfall streaked the tall windows of Courtroom 402 as the morning sun struggled to pierce through the heavy clouds over lower Manhattan.

Eleanor James sat at the front defense table, looking like a queen receiving subjects. She wore a tailored black wool suit with a pearl necklace, surrounded by four top-tier family law attorneys led by Richard Sterling himself. Her face was serene, confident, and completely devoid of doubt.

Across the aisle sat Andrew, wearing a sharp, charcoal three-piece suit. Beside him sat Marcus Vance, and next to Marcus sat Elizabeth.

Elizabeth wore a modest dark navy dress, her hair swept up into a neat bun. She held a thick leather binder in her lap, her knuckles pale as she gripped it.

Judge Sarah Higgins—a severe woman with sharp gray eyes and a reputation for prioritizing child safety above all else—presided over the bench.

"This is an emergency hearing regarding the temporary custody of minor child Alexander James," Judge Higgins announced, her gavel coming down with a sharp thwack. "Counsel for the petitioner, you may speak."

Richard Sterling stood up smoothly, adjusting his silk tie.

"Your Honor," Sterling began in a polished, deep voice, "we are here today because a grieving father, overwhelmed by his corporate duties as CEO of James Global, has tragically neglected the severe psychological needs of his five-year-old son. Since the tragic passing of Mrs. Emma James four months ago, Alexander has regressed into total mutism, severe spatial phobias, and emotional detachment."

Sterling gestured toward Andrew. "Mr. James leaves the child in the care of rotating domestic staff while flying across the country for business. Yesterday morning, Mr. James was absent while the child was left unattended in a hazardous domestic environment. We have submitted affidavits from medical experts proving that Alexander requires immediate, specialized institutional care under the loving guardianship of his grandmother, Eleanor James."

Judge Higgins frowned, reviewing the papers on her bench. She looked at Andrew. "Counsel for the respondent?"

Marcus Vance stood up. "Your Honor, the claims made by the petitioner are not only grossly exaggerated, but maliciously designed to manipulate this court for corporate leverage."

"Corporate leverage?" Sterling scoffed. "Your Honor, this is about a traumatized child!"

"If it is about the child, Mr. Sterling," Marcus countered powerfully, "then why did your client fail to mention that Alexander achieved his first major clinical breakthrough in four months yesterday morning?"

Judge Higgins raised an eyebrow. "A breakthrough?"

"Yes, Your Honor," Marcus said, gesturing toward Elizabeth. "We call to the stand Miss Elizabeth Davies—a board-certified pediatric occupational therapist who has been managing Alexander’s daily trauma integration therapy."

Eleanor’s head snapped toward Elizabeth. Her sharp eyes narrowed in immediate suspicion.

Elizabeth stood up, her heart pounding in her chest like a trapped bird, but her steps were steady as she walked to the witness stand and took the oath.

"Miss Davies," Marcus began, "please state your credentials for the court."

"I hold a Master of Science in Pediatric Occupational Therapy from Columbia University," Elizabeth said, her voice clear and resonance filling the quiet courtroom. "I am licensed by the State of New York and have spent seven years specializing in trauma-induced neurodevelopmental regression in young children."

Richard Sterling leaped to his feet. "Objection, Your Honor! Miss Davies was hired as a housekeeper! She passed herself off as domestic staff! This is a fraudulent attempt by the father to invent a clinical care team after the petition was filed!"

"Overruled," Judge Higgins stated sharply. "The witness is a licensed specialist. I will hear her testimony. Proceed, Miss Davies."

Elizabeth looked directly at the judge, ignoring Eleanor’s searing glare from the defense table.

"Three weeks ago," Elizabeth testified, "I entered the James residence to implement a non-clinical, low-pressure sensory integration program for Alex. Traditional clinical therapy was failing because Alex associated formal doctors with the trauma of his mother’s death."

She opened her binder, presenting documented daily charts. "Over twenty-one days, using low-arousal environmental play and spatial comfort techniques, Alex’s baseline stress levels dropped by sixty percent. Yesterday morning, Alex engaged in voluntary sensory play, initiated physical touch, and spoke his first word in nine weeks."

Judge Higgins leaned forward, deeply intrigued. "What was the word, Miss Davies?"

"He said 'Again,' Your Honor," Elizabeth said softly, a genuine, warm smile touching her lips. "He asked to repeat an activity that gave him joy. That single word represents a profound neuro-emotional shift from survival mode to relational trust."

The courtroom was dead silent. Andrew looked at Elizabeth, his heart filled with immense pride and gratitude.

Judge Higgins looked over her glasses at Richard Sterling. "Mr. Sterling, your petition claims the child is completely non-responsive and worsening. Yet a licensed specialist presents documented evidence of speech restoration and emotional connection under the father’s care."

Sterling’s face turned red. He whispered frantically with Eleanor, who was now trembling with fury.

Sterling stood up, his voice tight. "Your Honor, we question the credibility and objectivity of this witness! We request a brief recess to verify Miss Davies' background!"

"You have ten minutes, Mr. Sterling," Judge Higgins ruled, striking her gavel. "Court is in recess."

As the judge stepped down, Eleanor stood up instantly. She walked across the aisle, stopping inches away from Elizabeth, who was stepping down from the witness stand.

"You think you’re very clever, don't you, girl?" Eleanor hissed in a low, venomous whisper. "You lied to enter my son’s home. I will have your license revoked by sunset. I will ruin you."

Andrew stepped directly between his mother and Elizabeth, his imposing frame blocking Eleanor completely.

"Touch her, Mother," Andrew growled, his voice vibrating with absolute menace, "and I will execute every covenant clause in the James Global charter. I will strip you of your board seat, freeze your dividends, and leave you with nothing but your lawyers' bills. Try me."

Eleanor stared at her son, shock registering in her cold eyes. She had never seen Andrew look at anyone with such fierce, protective devotion.

Before Eleanor could reply, Sterling rushed back into the courtroom, holding a printed document, his eyes wide with triumphant malice.

"Your Honor! We have an emergency disclosure!" Sterling shouted as the judge returned to the bench. "We have just uncovered the true identity of this witness!"
