Chapter 7 - The Midnight Raid

The rain came down in heavy sheets over lower Manhattan, drumming relentlessly against the office windows of James Global Headquarters on Wall Street.
It was 1:00 AM.
The building was dark, empty, and silent, saved for the dim emergency lights glowing along the corridors.
Andrew, Elizabeth, and Marcus stood inside the glass-walled executive server room on the top floor. Marcus was working frantically on a laptop plugged directly into the central mainframe, his fingers flying across the glowing keyboard.
"The digital signature used for the offshore transfer came from a terminal inside this building at 4:30 PM today," Marcus explained, sweat glistening on his forehead. "Andrew, you were in a meeting with the investment board at 4:30 PM. You have thirty witnesses proving you weren't anywhere near your computer."
"That doesn't matter to the FBI," Andrew said grimly, pacing behind him. "If the master security key came from my terminal, the legal presumption of guilt falls on me unless we find out who actually sat at my desk and pressed the button."
"Who had access to your private office after you left for the board meeting?" Elizabeth asked, standing beside Andrew, her face etched with sharp determination.
"Only my personal executive assistant, Sarah, and the floor cleaning crew," Andrew replied.
"Sarah has been with you for eight years, Andrew," Marcus noted. "She’s completely loyal."
"Then it wasn't Sarah," Elizabeth said suddenly, her eyes lighting up with a sudden realization. "What cleaning company handles the executive floor?"
Andrew frowned. "Vanguard Facility Services. We’ve used them for five years."
Elizabeth pulled out her smartphone, her fingers navigating quickly to a private search registry. "Marcus, cross-reference Vanguard Facility Services with Eleanor’s personal holding companies. Right now."
Marcus typed rapidly into his laptop, running a deep corporate background check. Three seconds later, a red registry match flashed on the screen.
"Aegis Global Enterprises," Marcus read aloud, breathless. "A shell corporation owned by Eleanor James bought a seventy percent controlling stake in Vanguard Facility Services two weeks ago!"
Andrew let out a fierce growl of anger. "She planted a fake cleaner to access my terminal while I was at the board meeting!"
"We need the physical security footage from the private hallway camera outside your office door," Elizabeth urged, grabbing Andrew’s arm. "The central server records everything, right?"
"Yes," Andrew said, turning to the main terminal. He logged into the encrypted internal security system, entering his high-level administrative code.
He pulled up the video feed from the 4:00 PM to 5:00 PM timeframe for the 50th floor corridor.
They huddled around the screen.
At 4:25 PM, Andrew was seen leaving his office and walking toward the elevator bank for his meeting.
At 4:31 PM, a person wearing the gray uniform of Vanguard Facility Services walked down the hallway, pulling a large trash bin. The cleaner paused outside Andrew’s locked office door, pulled a sleek electronic keycard encoder from their pocket, swiped it, and stepped inside.
"Zoom in on the face," Elizabeth demanded.
Andrew zoomed in on the high-definition camera feed as the cleaner turned slightly toward the lens before entering the office.
When the face came into sharp focus, Elizabeth gasped, grabbing her chest.
Andrew’s breath caught in his throat.
The person wearing the cleaning uniform wasn't a stranger. It was a tall, thin man in his late thirties with sharp, sunken features and slicked-back dark hair.
"Julian..." Elizabeth whispered, her voice trembling with a mixture of shock and old, agonizing pain. "Julian James."
Andrew stared at the screen in utter disbelief. Julian James—his cousin, the father of Elizabeth’s lost niece Lily, the man who had abandoned Clara six years ago—was standing in his office.
"Julian didn't go to Europe," Andrew realized, his voice trembling with fury. "Eleanor kept him here in secret. She used her own nephew to execute the cyber-theft because Julian had access to the family's private cryptographic security codes!"
Suddenly, the heavy glass doors of the server room burst open!
"Don't move! Hands where we can see them!"
Four armed federal agents, clad in dark tactical gear with FBI badges hanging from their necks, strode into the room with weapons drawn. Behind them stepped Richard Sterling, wearing a smug, triumphant smile.
"Andrew James," the lead federal agent announced, pulling out a pair of steel handcuffs. "You are under arrest for grand larceny, wire fraud, and illegal liquidation of minor trust assets."
Sterling stepped forward, looking at Andrew with immense satisfaction. "It’s over, Andrew. You should have given your mother custody when you had the chance."
Andrew looked at the handcuffs, then at Elizabeth, who was stepping in front of him protectively.
"Don't touch him!" Elizabeth shouted at the agents. "We have the video proof right here! Julian James committed the fraud under Eleanor James's orders!"
Sterling chuckled coldly. "A video feed from a server you illegally accessed at 1:00 AM? That evidence is inadmissible, Miss Davies. And besides... Julian James left the country two hours ago on a private jet bound for Switzerland."
Andrew looked into Elizabeth’s terrified eyes. He saw the horror of history repeating itself—a James family member being framed, destroyed, and dragged away by Eleanor's relentless machine.
Andrew reached out, holding Elizabeth’s face gently in his hands, completely ignoring the federal agents stepping behind him.
"Listen to me, Elizabeth," Andrew whispered, his voice calm, loving, and unshakable. "Go back to the penthouse. Protect Alex. Marcus will handle the legal bail by morning. Do not let Eleanor near my son."
"Andrew, no!" Elizabeth wept as the agents grabbed Andrew’s arms, pulling him back and snapping the steel handcuffs around his wrists.
"I love you, Elizabeth," Andrew declared clearly, his eyes burning into hers as he was dragged toward the door. "I love you and Alex! Hold the house!"
As Andrew was led away in chains through the dark building, Elizabeth stood in the server room, wiping her tears away. Her fear vanished, replaced by a terrifying, unstoppable surge of righteous fury.
She looked at Marcus, who was holding the encrypted flash drive containing the security video.
"Marcus," Elizabeth said, her voice dropping into a cold, lethal whisper. "Where in Switzerland is Julian James flying to?"
May you like
Marcus blinked, surprised. "The family estate in Zurich. Why?"
"Because that’s where my niece Lily is," Elizabeth declared, her eyes flashing with pure fire. "We aren't waiting for morning, Marcus. We’re going to Switzerland."
