Chapter 9 - The Truth Unveiled

Julian stumbled backward, his face turning ghost-white, his hands shaking violently as he backed away from the staircase.

"How... how did you get in here?" Julian stammered, his voice filled with terror. "You’re supposed to be in New York! You’re the housekeeper!"

"I am Clara’s sister," Elizabeth said, her voice echoing with thunderous clarity in the vaulted wooden chalet. "And I am the woman who is going to end Eleanor’s reign of terror tonight."

"Get away from me!" Julian yelled, reaching frantically for a decorative brass fire poker resting near the upper fireplace.

Elizabeth didn't stop. She reached the top of the landing, standing ten feet away from him, completely fearless.

"Look at you, Julian," Elizabeth said, her tone filled with deep, heartbreaking pity. "Six years ago, you let Eleanor destroy Clara. You let her take your daughter away. You ran away to Europe like a coward. And now, six years later, you are still Eleanor’s errand boy, framing Andrew and stealing from a motherless five-year-old child."

"I had no choice!" Julian sobbed, collapsing onto a leather sofa, clutching his head in his hands. "Eleanor controlled everything! She threatened to cut me off! She threatened to lock Lily away where I’d never see her!"

"You always had a choice, Julian!" Elizabeth shouted, tears finally spilling from her eyes. "Clara loved you! She would have lived in a one-bedroom apartment with you and Lily! She didn't care about the James money! But you were too weak to choose love over luxury!"

Julian wept bitterly, his shoulders shaking with genuine, pathetic remorse. "I’m sorry... I’m so sorry about Clara... I regret it every single day of my life, Elizabeth..."

"If you regret it," Elizabeth said, stepping closer and kneeling right in front of him, "then fix it, Julian. For once in your miserable life, be a father. Be a man."

Julian looked up through his wet eyes. "How? Eleanor owns the courts, the banks, the police... She framed Andrew so completely that he’s going to prison for twenty years!"

"She framed him using your terminal access," Elizabeth said gently, reaching into her pocket and pulling out the satellite transmitter connected directly to Marcus’s setup in the SUV outside. "The FBI is listening to this conversation right now, Julian."

Julian gasped, staring at the small blinking red light on her lapel.

"In Manhattan, federal prosecutors are recording every word you just said," Elizabeth revealed softly. "If you sign a full confession now—detailing how Eleanor forced you to forge the trust transfer and how she framed Clara six years ago—Andrew’s lawyers will grant you full legal immunity for state crimes, and Marcus will secure full legal custody of your daughter Lily so she can leave that boarding school forever."

Julian stared at her, his jaw hanging open. "Immunity...? Lily...?"

"You can save Andrew, Julian," Elizabeth urged, her voice filled with deep, emotional conviction. "You can save Alex. And you can finally give your daughter her freedom. Don't let Eleanor win."

Julian looked at the fire crackling in the hearth, then down at his trembling hands. The weight of six years of guilt, fear, and cowardice seemed to crush him, until finally, a long, shuttering breath escaped his lips.

He looked at Elizabeth, a tear tracing down his hollow cheek.

"Give me the paper, Elizabeth," Julian whispered softly. "I’ll tell them everything."
