Chapter 6 - The Shadows of Sabotage

A month passed.

The rainy autumn days gave way to the crisp, clear cold of early winter in Manhattan.

The James penthouse had transformed completely. The sterile, quiet museum that Andrew had maintained after Emma’s death was now alive with light, music, and warmth. Toys were no longer hidden away in cupboards; drawing paper and colored pencils covered the large dining table, and the smell of fresh cinnamon pastries filled the air every afternoon.

Alex was thriving. He was speaking in short, clear sentences now. He was running down the long hallway, playing hide-and-seek with Andrew, and holding Elizabeth’s hand whenever they walked to the nearby park.

One evening, Andrew returned home at 6:00 PM—a time he had never managed to achieve in his fifteen years as a CEO. He had completely restructured his executive schedule, delegating board meetings so he could have dinner with his son every single night.

He walked into the warm living room, unbuttoning his coat.

Alex was sitting on the plush rug, building a wooden train track. Elizabeth was sitting beside him, laughing as Alex loudly announced, "Train go fast!"

Andrew stood in the archway for a moment, simply absorbing the scene. A profound, sweet warmth filled his chest—a feeling he thought he had lost forever when his wife died. He wasn't just coming home to a son anymore. He was coming home to her.

Over the past four weeks, the unspoken pull between Andrew and Elizabeth had grown into a deep, intense attraction. Every shared glance over dinner, every quiet conversation after Alex went to sleep, and every soft touch of their hands had drawn them irresistibly closer.

"Daddy!" Alex called out, jumping up and running toward Andrew.

Andrew caught his son in his arms, lifting him high into the air as Alex giggled happily. "Hey, buddy! Did the train make it to the station today?"

"Yes! Elizabeth helped!" Alex grinned, pointing toward her.

Elizabeth stood up, offering Andrew a warm, glowing smile that made his heart leap. "Welcome home, Andrew."

"It’s good to be home," Andrew said softly, his eyes locking onto hers with unmistakable tenderness.

After setting Alex down to continue playing, Andrew walked over to Elizabeth. He reached out, his fingers gently tucking a loose lock of brown hair behind her ear. Elizabeth blushed softly, leaning slightly into his touch.

"You look tired," Elizabeth murmured, looking up at him. "Bad day at the office?"

"Eleanor is pushing back at the board level," Andrew admitted, his face darkening slightly. "She’s trying to organize a proxy vote next week to remove me as CEO, claiming my focus has shifted away from the business."

Elizabeth’s smile faded, concern filling her eyes. "Andrew... is my presence here causing you to lose your company?"

"No," Andrew said firmly, taking her hand and holding it tight. "You and Alex are the only reasons I care about keeping it. Eleanor wants control because she feeds on power. I want control because I need to ensure this empire belongs to Alex when he grows up. I won't let her touch it."

Suddenly, Andrew’s private phone rang sharply in his pocket.

He pulled it out. It was Marcus Vance.

"Marcus, what is it?" Andrew asked, stepping slightly away.

"Andrew, we have a massive problem," Marcus’s voice sounded frantic over the speaker. "The Swiss authorities just contacted us regarding the international trust fund set up for Alex by his late mother's family."

Andrew’s eyes narrowed. "What about it? The trust is locked until Alex turns twenty-one."

"It was locked," Marcus revealed grimly. "Someone submitted forged corporate authorization documents using your digital signature three hours ago. Five hundred million dollars has been liquidated from the trust and transferred into an unraceable offshore account in the Cayman Islands!"

Andrew felt the air leave his lungs. "What?!"

"And that’s not the worst part," Marcus added, his voice trembling. "The financial crime division of the FBI just received an anonymous tip claiming that you embezzled the funds to cover personal hedge fund losses in Chicago!"

Andrew stared at the phone in sheer disbelief.

"They are issuing a federal warrant for your financial records, Andrew," Marcus warned. "If you can't prove you didn't authorize that transfer by tomorrow morning, you’re going to be arrested for grand larceny and child trust fraud."

Andrew dropped his arm, his mind reeling. The trap was masterfully executed. Eleanor wasn't just trying to take Alex or vote Andrew out of his CEO position. She was trying to put her own son in federal prison, destroying his reputation forever, so she could assume total control over everything.

Elizabeth stepped up to him, seeing the deathly pale color of his face. "Andrew? What happened?"

Andrew looked at her, horror and fury battling in his eyes. "Eleanor just stole five hundred million dollars from my son’s trust... and framed me for it."
