Chapter 3 - THE UNSEEN THREAT

By mid-autumn, the atmosphere at the Vale estate had become electric with tension. While Alexander spent his days fighting off suspicious corporate maneuvers at the Manhattan office, his nights were dedicated to his son. The bond between Matthew and Lucy had become absolute; they were inseparable, moving through the grand estate like two conspirators who possessed a secret language nobody else understood.
Lucy was teaching Matthew how to read human body language beyond signs. "People who lie always look at your hair or your chin," she signed to him one morning near the stables. "They can't hold your eyes because eyes don't have a mute button."
Matthew laughed, his hands moving quickly: LIKE... THE... MAN... WITH... THE... SILVER... WATCH?
Lucy frowned. WHICH... MAN?
Matthew pointed toward the long brick driveway. A sleek black town car had just pulled up, and out stepped Julian Vance, carrying a heavy leather briefcase.
"That's Mr. Vance," Lucy whispered, though Matthew read her lips effortlessly. "He's your dad's second-in-command."
Matthew’s eyes narrowed as he watched Vance step out of the car. HE... DOES... NOT... LOOK... AT... EYES, Matthew signed sharply. HE... LOOKS... AT... POCKETS.
Lucy felt a cold shudder go down her spine. Children who grow up without one sense often develop an uncanny hyper-awareness in others. Matthew didn't need to hear Vance’s smooth, persuasive voice to know that the man was untrustworthy; he could read the micro-expressions of deceit written across the executive’s tight jaw and restless shoulders.
Vance had arrived unannounced for a high-level private review of the final source code for Project Iris. Because of high-security protocols, Alexander kept a physical, air-gapped server backup of the Iris encryption key in the vault inside his Greenwich study.
"Alexander," Vance said smoothly as he was escorted into the primary study by Clara. "I brought the updated federal compliance documents. The Department of Education needs your final digital signature before the public unveiling next week."
Alexander looked up from his desk, rubbing his exhausted eyes. "Julian. You could have emailed these. Why drive two hours from the city?"
"This project is too vital to risk digital interception," Vance lied seamlessly, placing the documents on the desk. "Besides, I wanted to check on you personally. The board is nervous, Alexander. Rumors are circulating that you've grown... distracted."
Alexander’s expression hardened. "My dedication to Vale Systems has not wavered, Julian. And my personal life is no longer open for board discussion."
"Of course, of course," Vance said quickly, holding up his hands in a gesture of faux surrender. "I admire your commitment to your son. Truly. But let us ensure your legacy remains intact. I need you to authorize the master security key transfer so our network team can run the final pre-audit tonight."
While Alexander reviewed the thick stack of compliance papers, Vance stood near the heavy oak bookshelf. His eyes darted toward the subtle seam in the wall paneling where the hidden security safe was located. Unbeknownst to Alexander, Vance had hidden a tiny micro-camera inside his lapel pin, recording every movement as Alexander stepped away from his desk, approached the wall panel, and entered an eight-digit key code into the digital keypad.
4 - 8 - 1 - 9 - 2 - 0 - 0 - 4
Vance’s heart hammered with dark triumph. It was Isabelle’s birthday. Alexander’s Sentimentality had given him the final piece of the puzzle.
Outside the study window, standing near the garden trellis, Matthew and Lucy were watching. Through the sheer lace curtains, Matthew’s keen eyes tracked his father’s movements—and then tracked Vance’s subtle lapel pin adjustment.
THE... MAN... IS... WATCHING... THE... CODE, Matthew signed urgently to Lucy, his fingers trembling with precision. HE... IS... TAKING... NUMBERS.
"He's stealing from your father," Lucy realized with a gasp.
Before they could react, Clara approached the study doors from the interior hallway, carrying a tray of fresh coffee for the meeting. As she pushed the door open, Vance quickly stepped back from the bookshelf, a tight, artificial smile fixed on his face.
"Thank you, Clara," Vance said loudly, his tone condescending. "Set it on the side table."
As Clara leaned down to place the tray, her elbow accidentally brushed against Vance’s heavy briefcase resting on the edge of the table. The briefcase clattered to the floor, snapping open.
Dozens of confidential corporate documents spilled across the Persian rug. But it wasn't the documents that caught Clara’s eye—it was a glossy, high-resolution photograph that slid out from a side pocket.
It was a photograph of Lucy.
Taken from a distance, standing outside her middle school gates, with red crosshairs lightly sketched over her face in red ink. Next to it was a detailed background report on Clara Harper, including her bank details, mortgage records, and daily schedules.
Clara froze, the blood draining completely from her face.
"What is this?" Clara whispered, her voice shaking uncontrollably as she picked up the photo of her daughter. "Why do you have pictures of my child?"
Vance’s demeanor instantly shifted. The smooth, charming executive vanished, replaced by a cold, deadly predator. He snatched the photograph from her hand, his fingers crushing the paper.
"You should learn to mind your business, housekeeper," Vance hissed in a lethal whisper, ensuring Alexander, who was in the adjoining bathroom washing his hands, couldn't hear. "You and your little bastard girl are interfering with matters far beyond your comprehending. If you say a single word to Alexander about what you saw in this room, I will ensure your life—and your daughter's future—is completely destroyed. Do you understand me? One word, and I will have you prosecuted for corporate espionage and ruin you."
Clara stood paralyzed with terror. She wasn't a powerful CEO; she was a single mother working a service job to support her child. The immense power of corporate wealth terrified her.
When Alexander walked back into the room, Vance was already standing by the door, his briefcase neatly snapped shut.
"Everything is in order, Alexander," Vance said smoothly, as if nothing had happened. "I’ll see you at the board meeting on Thursday."
Alexander noticed Clara standing rigidly by the coffee service, pale as chalk. "Clara? Are you alright?"
Clara looked at Alexander, then down at her trembling hands. Vance’s silent threat echoed in her mind like a death sentence.
May you like
"I... I am fine, Mr. Vale," she stammered, tears threatening to spill from her eyes. "Just... tired."
She turned and rushed out of the room, leaving Alexander deeply puzzled—and leaving Matthew, who had watched the confrontation through the window, filled with a burning, protective rage.
