Chapter 4 - THE SILENT INFILTRATION

The atmosphere inside the carriage house that night was suffused with terror. Clara sat at the small kitchen table, her face buried in her hands, weeping quietly as she explained the threat to Lucy.
"We have to leave, Lucy," Clara sobbed, pulling a worn suitcase out from the closet. "These men are dangerous. They are watching you. They have photos of you outside your school. A man like Julian Vance can destroy people like us with a single phone call. He can make us disappear or put us in prison!"
"No, Mom!" Lucy protested, tears streaming down her cheeks as she held her mother’s hands. "We can't just run away! Mr. Vale trusts us! Matthew needs us! If we leave, Mr. Vance will destroy everything Mr. Vale has built!"
"It isn't our fight, Lucy!" Clara cried out, her voice cracked with maternal panic. "I brought you into this world to protect you! I can't let rich men's games put a target on your back!"
Suddenly, a quiet tap echoed against the window pane.
Lucy wiped her eyes and pulled back the curtain. Standing on the fire escape outside, soaked in the cold autumn rain, was Matthew.
Lucy quickly unlatched the window, letting the boy scramble inside. He was shivering, holding a small waterproof tablet tucked tightly inside his jacket.
MATTHEW! Lucy signed frantically. WHAT... ARE... YOU... DOING... HERE?
Matthew didn't answer with signs right away. Instead, he placed his hands firmly on Clara’s trembling shoulders, looking directly into the mother’s terrified eyes. He slowly raised his hands, signing with absolute, unwavering conviction:
YOU... PROTECTED... ME. NOW... I... PROTECT... YOU.
He turned on his tablet and showed them a recorded video stream. Matthew had used his high-powered astronomical telescope from his bedroom window to record the interior of Alexander’s study during Vance’s visit. The high-definition camera had captured everything: Vance spying on the safe combination, Vance threatening Clara, and Vance dropping a small, metallic electronic bug beneath Alexander’s mahogany desk before leaving.
"He planted a listening device," Lucy gasped. "He's listening to everything Mr. Vale says!"
Matthew tapped the screen and signed rapidly: THURSDAY... BOARD... MEETING. VANCE... WILL... STEAL... IRIS. HE... WILL... FRAME... MY... FATHER.
"We have to tell your dad right now!" Lucy said, reaching for the door.
Matthew held up a hand, stopping her. NO, he signed, his eyes flashing with a sharp, brilliant intellect that mirrored his father’s genius. IF... WE... TELL... HIM... NOW... VANCE... WILL... KNOW. VANCE... IS... LISTENING... TO... THE... ROOM.
Lucy’s eyes widened as the realization hit her. If Alexander confronted Vance immediately, Vance would activate his backup plan, destroy the digital paper trail, and potentially use his dark connections to carry out his threats against Clara and Lucy.
They needed to catch Vance in the act—in front of the entire board of directors, where his corporate influence couldn't save him.
WE... NEED... A... PLAN, Matthew signed, a determined, fierce smile spreading across his face. A... SILENT... PLAN.
For the next three hours, while the stormy rain battered the carriage house, the three of them mapped out a dangerous strategy. Matthew brought his deep technical knowledge of his father’s smart-home infrastructure and local area networks. Lucy provided her keen observational skills and agility. Clara, overcoming her fear through a mother’s instinct to protect her child and the boy who had become like a son to her, agreed to act as their inside operative within the main house.
The plan was highly complex and dangerous. They needed to bypass Vale Systems’ state-of-the-art security, access the central server room during the Thursday night gala at Manhattan headquarters, and swap Vance’s corrupted encryption drive with the authentic security key—all without raising the alarm or alerting Vance’s security personnel.
The following morning, the estate returned to a surface-level calm. Alexander, looking increasingly burdened by the upcoming board meeting, spent the afternoon working in his study. He noticed that Matthew was sitting near him, quietly working on his computer, while Lucy helped Clara clean the library dustings.
Alexander stopped typing and looked at his son. He raised his hands, signing slowly: ARE... YOU... OKAY... MY... SON?
Matthew looked up at his father. His heart aching with the weight of the secret he was carrying, but he maintained a calm, steady expression. He raised his hands and signed back:
I... AM... WITH... YOU... ALWAYS... FATHER.
Alexander smiled softly, a wave of profound relief washing over his face. He reached over and stroked Matthew’s hair. "I don't know what I would do without you, Matthew," Alexander spoke aloud, his voice thick with emotion. "Whatever happens at the company this week... you are my real legacy."

In the corner of the room, Lucy watched the exchange, her great-grandfather’s words echoing in her mind: Courage isn't always loud. Sometimes courage is crossing a room when everyone else looks away.
They were about to cross a room that could change all their lives forever.
