Chapter 5 - THE GREENWICH INFILTRATION

The night before the decisive board meeting, the Vale estate was enveloped in a dense blanket of fog rolling in from Long Island Sound. It was the perfect cover for a betrayal—and an ambush.

At 2:00 AM, while Alexander was asleep in his quarters after taking a heavy sedative prescribed for his stress-induced migraines, a dark silhouette moved through the formal gardens. It was missing the grace of a guest; it moved with the purposeful, heavy steps of an intruder.

Julian Vance had sent his chief IT mercenary, a disgraced former intelligence contractor named Marcus Kane, to perform the final piece of digital sabotage. Vance wanted to ensure that even if Alexander tried to upload the authentic encryption key from his home vault, the system would automatically corrupt the file upon transmission.

Inside the quiet mansion, Matthew was awake.

He didn't need hearing to know someone was in the house; he had rigged his room’s smart lighting system to translate motion-sensor triggers into subtle color changes. As Kane picked the lock of the French terrace doors, the ambient LED strip along Matthew’s headboard shifted from a soft ambient blue to a pulsing crimson.

Matthew immediately tapped his smart watch, sending a vibration alert to Lucy’s phone down in the carriage house.

Within ninety seconds, Lucy slipped through the basement service door, holding a pair of heavy rubberized flashlights and a master key card Clara had given her. She met Matthew in the dark, high-ceilinged hallway outside the master study.

HE... IS... INSIDE... THE... STUDY, Matthew signed urgently in the dark, his hands lit only by the faint green glow of the emergency exit signs.

Lucy looked through the cracked oak door. Inside, a broad-shouldered man wearing a black tactical sweater was standing over Alexander’s desk. A high-speed hardware cloning device was plugged directly into the primary server terminal, its blue indicators blinking rapidly as it rewrote the core protocols of Project Iris.

"He's destroying your dad's work," Lucy whispered.

Matthew pulled out his smartphone. He didn't panic. Instead, he activated a custom local app he had coded over the past forty-eight hours—a program that hijacked the mansion's smart environmental control system.

With three fast taps, Matthew overrode the study’s automated security protocols.

Suddenly, the heavy reinforced steel fire shutters slammed down over the windows and doors with a deafening CLANG that rattled the entire wing of the house. The study was instantly sealed shut, trapping Kane inside.

Simultaneously, Matthew triggered the estate’s auxiliary fire-suppression system. High-pressure inert argon gas and cold water mist began pouring from the study ceiling, overwhelming the room and blinding the intruder.

Inside the sealed study, Kane panicked. He dropped his cracking tools, coughing violently as the cold mist blinded him, and desperately attempted to manually override the emergency lock.

The noise finally shattered Alexander’s heavy sleep. The CEO rushed down the grand staircase in his robe, his face pale, holding a firearm he kept locked in his bedside drawer.

"Matthew! Lucy! Get back!" Alexander shouted, racking the slide of the pistol as he approached the sealed study door.

Matthew stepped directly in front of his father’s weapon, placing a hand firmly on Alexander’s arm and pressing it down. He looked his father dead in the eye and signed rapidly:

NO... GUNS. LOOK... AT... THE... MONITOR.

Alexander, bewildered and trembling with adrenaline, looked at the external security tablet Matthew handed him. On the live camera feed inside the sealed study, Alexander saw Marcus Kane trapped in the mist, desperately trying to destroy the digital cloning device he had plugged into the corporate terminal. On Kane’s jacket was an embroidered logo: Apex Security Logistics—the private security firm contracted exclusively by Julian Vance.

Alexander’s breath hitched. The reality of the treason smashed into him like a physical blow.

"Julian..." Alexander whispered, his voice cracking with utter disbelief. "It was Julian all along."

Matthew took his father’s hand, looking up at him with fierce, mature determination. He signed slowly:

HE... THOUGHT... YOU... WERE... ALONE. HE... THOUGHT... I... WAS... NOTHING. SHOW... HIM... WHO... WE... ARE.

Alexander looked down at his deaf son—the boy he had spent years grieving as broken—and saw a warrior standing beside him. Tears prickled Alexander’s eyes, but his posture instantly changed. The paralysis of grief and confusion vanished, replaced by the lethal, cold intellect that had made him the most feared CEO on the East Coast.

"Clara!" Alexander called out as the housekeeper came running down the hall. "Call the local police department. Tell Chief Miller we have an armed industrial intruder locked in my study."

May you like

Alexander then turned to Matthew and Lucy, dropping to one knee so he was at eye level with the children. His hands were completely steady now as he signed to them:

THE... WAR... IS... NOT... OVER. TOMORROW... WE... GO... TO... MANHATTAN.
