Chapter 4 - The Threat in the Sunroom

The air in the sunroom instantly turned toxic.

Caleb stood up straight, shifting his body smoothly to shield both Landon and Julia from Victoria’s venomous gaze. His eyes narrowed into gray ice.

"Victoria," Caleb said, his voice dangerously low. "You were not invited to this house today."

"I don't need an invitation to inspect the well-being of my nephew, Caleb!" Victoria snapped, her sharp red lips curling into a sneer. She gestured wildly at the harness holding Landon. "Richard called me last night in absolute shock! He told me you fired him without cause and hired a disgraced, unlicensed felon to perform unregulated, dangerous experiments on my sister's crippled child!"

Landon shrank back into his harness, his triumphant smile vanishing, replaced by a look of sheer terror. Julia stepped forward immediately, placing a gentle, protective hand on Landon’s shoulder.

"He is not crippled, Mrs. Vance," Julia said, her voice dropping into a calm, ice-cold register that cut through Victoria’s hysteria. "And if you shout in this room again, I will have security escort you off the premises for causing acute psychological distress to a pediatric patient."

Victoria looked at Julia as if she were a cockroach on her expensive leather shoes.

"Shut your mouth, servant," Victoria spat. "I know exactly who you are, 'Dr.' Reyes. I read your public disciplinary board transcript. You are a rogue medical criminal who lost her license for illegally operating on children! How dare you lay your hands on my nephew?!"

"She is helping me walk!" Landon yelled out suddenly, his voice cracking with emotion. "She did more for me in three months than Dr. Vance did in three years!"

Dr. Vance stepped forward, adjusting his tie nervously. "Landon, quiet now. You don't understand the complex neuro-pathological risks—"

"He understands that he took three steps yesterday, Richard," Caleb interrupted, taking three slow steps toward his brother-in-law. Caleb towered over the physician, his physical presence radiating sheer, terrifying menace. "And he took another step five minutes ago. Something you claimed was medically impossible."

Dr. Vance paled, taking a quick step back behind Victoria. "It... it's a temporary reflex spasm, Caleb! It's dangerous! Forcing weight onto unconditioned spinal tissue can cause permanent autonomic dysreflexia! It could kill him!"

"Get out," Caleb commanded.

Victoria took a step forward, pulling a thick legal document from her briefcase. "We are not leaving, Caleb! As trustee of the Elena Estate, I hold co-guardianship authority over Landon’s medical care! If you do not terminate this illegal arrangement with this criminal woman immediately, I will file an emergency injunction in court by three o'clock today!"

She held up the paper, her eyes glinting with triumphant malice.

"I will have Landon placed under temporary state medical wardship," Victoria declared. "And I will have this woman arrested for practicing medicine without a license!"

The room fell into an agonizing silence.

Julia felt a cold dread sink into her stomach. She knew the law. Technically, despite Caleb’s authorization, practicing neuro-rehabilitation without an active state license while using specialized medical equipment exposed both her and Caleb to severe legal liability. If Victoria went to a judge right now, a court order could seize the equipment, halt Landon’s progress, and throw Julia into a state penitentiary.

Caleb looked at the legal document in Victoria’s hand. He knew his sister-in-law’s true motivation. Victoria didn't care about Landon’s health. If Landon remained permanently disabled, Victoria retained management control of Elena’s thirty-percent stake in Donovan Capital until Landon turned twenty-five. But if Landon recovered fully, control of the trust defaulted immediately to Caleb and Landon.

It was never about medical care. It was about forty million dollars in corporate voting power.

Caleb let out a slow, terrifying laugh.

He took another step toward Victoria, stopping mere inches from her face.

"Do you know what I do for a living, Victoria?" Caleb asked softly, his voice silky smooth and lethal. "I buy companies. I dismantle corporate boards. I destroy people who think they are clever."

He reached out, grabbed the legal injunction from her hand, and ripped it down the middle with a sharp, brutal CRACK.

He dropped the torn pieces onto the floor at her feet.

"File your injunction," Caleb whispered. "By noon tomorrow, I will launch a full forensic audit of the Elena Donovan Family Trust. I will investigate every dollar Richard Vance billed to that account over the last thirty-six months. I will audit your personal offshore accounts in the Caymans. And I will hire every aggressive trial lawyer in Manhattan to ensure you spend the next ten years answering federal subpoenas."

Victoria’s breath hitched. Panic flickered behind her cold eyes. "You... you wouldn't dare open the trust files—"

"Try me," Caleb growled. "Touch my son again. Threaten the woman healing him again. And I will burn your life to the ground until there isn't an ash left to bury."

He turned his back on her, pointing toward the door.

"Security!" Caleb roared.

Two large, uniformed estate guards stepped into the sunroom instantly.

"Escort Mrs. Vance and Dr. Vance off my property," Caleb ordered without looking back. "If either of them steps foot past the front gates again, treat them as armed trespassers."

The guards stepped forward, grabbing Dr. Vance and Victoria by their arms.

"You're making a mistake, Caleb!" Victoria screamed as she was dragged down the glass hallway. "She's using you! She's a disgraced fraud! You're going to destroy your son!"

Her shrieks faded down the long marble corridor until the front double doors slammed shut, restoring a heavy, suffocating silence to the sunroom.

Landon was shaking in his harness, tears spilling down his cheeks.

Julia walked over to Caleb, her chest tight. "Caleb... she's right about the legal risks. If she goes to the state medical board—"

Caleb turned to her. He didn't look angry. He looked entirely calm, composed, and absolutely resolute.

He reached out and gently took Julia’s hand in his. His grip was warm, strong, and unyielding.

"She won't touch you, Julia," Caleb said, looking deeply into her eyes. "I promise you on my life. No one touches you while you are under my roof."

Julia stared up into his fierce gray eyes, feeling a strange, powerful electric shock run down her spine. For two years, she had fought the world alone. But standing here, held by Caleb Donovan’s powerful grip, she realized she was no longer fighting alone.
