Chapter 9 - The Promise on the Shore
The wedding took place two months later, on a breathtaking golden afternoon in late May.
The ceremony was held on the high stone terrace of the Donovan estate, overlooking the sparkling, calm waters of the Long Island Sound. White orchids and eucalyptus garlands draped over a wooden archway at the edge of the lawn.
Only fifty close friends, foundation staff, and supporters were in attendance.
Julia walked down the aisle on the arm of Senator Aldrich, who had become a dear father figure to her over the past year. Her dress was a simple, breathtaking ivory silk gown with delicate lace sleeves, trailing softly along the white carpet laid across the grass.
Standing beneath the archway was Caleb, his gray eyes locked onto her with a look of fierce, eternal devotion. And beside him stood Landon, serving proudly as his father’s Best Man, standing tall on his legs without even needing his crutches for support.
When Julia reached the archway, Caleb took her hands in his.
The minister smiled warmly. "Caleb, do you take Julia to be your lawful wedded wife, to have and to hold, in sickness and in health, for richer or for poorer, until death do you part?"
Caleb looked deep into Julia’s eyes, his voice steady, deep, and filled with infinite warmth.
"I take her," Caleb said. "I take her as my savior, my partner, my best friend, and the light of my life. I promise to love her, honor her, and protect her with every breath I have, for all the days of my life."
The minister turned to Julia. "Julia, do you take Caleb to be your lawful wedded husband?"
Julia smiled through her tears, her heart overflowing with love.
"I take him," Julia said softly, her voice carrying across the quiet lawn. "I take him as my shield, my home, and my true love. I promise to stand by him, walk with him, and love him and Landon forever."
"By the power vested in me, I now pronounce you husband and wife," the minister declared. "You may kiss the bride!"

Caleb gathered Julia into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her with deep, passionate devotion under the warm golden sun. The guests erupted into joyful applause, tossing white rose petals into the air.
Landon cheered at the top of his lungs, hugging both of them tightly as they turned to face their friends and family as husband and wife.
