Chapter 6 - The Siege of Law

"Caleb Donovan!" a voice thundered through a megaphone from the driveway. "This is the State Police! We have a judicial warrant for the arrest of Julia Reyes for felony impersonation of a medical officer and practicing without a license!"

Julia’s face turned paper-white.

"No," she gasped, stepping back, panic seizing her lungs. "They... they brought federal marshals."

Caleb grabbed her shoulders firmly, forcing her to look at him. "Stay calm. Look at me, Julia. Stay behind me."

"Caleb, if I am arrested under federal charge, I will be held without bail!" Julia cried, her hands trembling violently. "Victoria did it... she used her political connections—"

"I don't care who she used," Caleb said, his voice dropping into an ice-cold, lethal tone. "They are not taking you from this house."

He took her hand, leading her quickly down the stone stairs into the main house.

Landon was standing at the top of the grand marble staircase in his blue pajamas, holding onto the railing, his eyes wide with fear as the heavy red and blue lights strobed through the tall foyer windows.

"Dad? What's happening?" Landon whimpered. "Is Julia in trouble?"

Julia ran up three steps, taking Landon in a tight, comforting embrace. "I'm okay, sweet boy. I'm right here. Go back to your room with Nurse Sarah, okay?"

Caleb walked to the grand double front doors, pulling them open with sudden, terrifying force.

Standing on the granite porch were six armed state troopers, two federal marshals, and a slick, smug-looking prosecutor named Arthur Sterling—a man known as Victoria Vance’s chief legal hatchet man. Victoria stood behind them, a cold, triumphant smirk plastered across her face.

"Mr. Donovan," Prosecutor Sterling said, holding up a certified document stamped with a red wax seal. "We have a court order signed by Judge Harrison authorizing the immediate search of these premises and the arrest of Julia Reyes. Step aside, sir."

Caleb stood in the middle of the doorway, his six-foot-two frame blocking the entrance entirely. He didn't move an inch.

"You are on private property, Sterling," Caleb said, his voice vibrating with absolute menace. "And that warrant is invalid."

Sterling sneered. "It is signed by a State Supreme Court judge, Donovan. If you obstruct federal officers, I will have you handcuffed and charged with felony interference!"

"Read the jurisdiction clause on page three, Sterling," Caleb said smoothly, reaching into his pocket and pulling out his phone.

Sterling blinked, momentarily thrown off. "What?"

"This estate sits on federal tribal boundary land granted under the 1982 Long Island Coastal Conservation Mandate," Caleb explained coldly, his gray eyes burning through the prosecutor. "State warrants have no force of law on this property without a secondary endorsement from the Second Circuit Federal Appeals Court. An endorsement you do not have."

Victoria’s smirk instantly evaporated. She grabbed Sterling’s arm. "Is that true?!"

Sterling frantically scanned the paperwork, his face turning pale as he realized the jurisdictional oversight.

At that exact moment, two sleek black luxury sedans sped up the driveway, blocking the police cruisers.

Out stepped four men in tailored gray suits carrying thick leather legal cases. Leading them was Senator Thomas Aldrich—the senior federal judge nominee for New York, and Caleb’s personal close friend and chief corporate counsel.

"Good evening, Gentlemen," Senator Aldrich said smoothly, walking up the stone steps with calm, overwhelming authority. He handed a blue leather folder directly to the federal marshal.

"What is this?" the marshal asked, opening the folder.

"That is an emergency stay of execution and a petition for full medical license reinstatement filed four hours ago with the Federal Appellate Board," Aldrich replied calmly. "Signed by the Chief Justice of the Circuit."

Victoria gasped, her voice shrill with shock. "On what grounds?!"

"On the grounds of extraordinary public service and breakthrough clinical success," Aldrich said, turning his head to look at Victoria with utter disgust. "Accompanied by a sworn affidavit from three independent neuro-specialists from Johns Hopkins who reviewed Landon Donovan’s progress video two hours ago."

Aldrich stepped closer to Victoria, leaning in slightly.

"And accompanied by a formal criminal complaint filed against Dr. Richard Vance for medical fraud, systemic child endangerment, and illegal prescription kickbacks," Aldrich added smoothly. "The State Attorney General’s office is currently seizing Dr. Vance’s clinic files as we speak, Victoria."

Dr. Vance, who was standing near the police cruisers, let out a pathetic choke of terror. He turned and tried to run toward his car, but two state troopers immediately cut him off, grabbing his arms and shoving him against the hood.

"Richard!" Victoria screamed, her face contorting into pure horror as hand-cuffs clicked around her cousin's wrists.

"As for you, Mrs. Vance," Senator Aldrich continued calmly, handing another white envelope to the state police captain. "You are hereby served with a civil suit for corporate conspiracy, breach of fiduciary duty, and illegal harassment. Mr. Donovan has initiated a full buyout of your shares in Donovan Capital at twenty cents on the dollar under the company's emergency hostility clause."

Victoria looked at Caleb standing in the doorway—immovable, victorious, and terrifyingly calm.

"You ruined me..." Victoria whispered, her voice trembling with hatred.

"You tried to cage my son," Caleb said coldly, looking down at her as if she were dirt under his shoes. "You should be thankful I didn't ruin you completely. Get off my land."

The state police captain stepped forward, placing a hand on Victoria’s shoulder. "Ma'am, you need to step back to your vehicle now."

Screaming hysterically, Victoria Vance was escorted down the driveway, her power, her wealth, and her malicious scheme collapsing into complete ruin.

The flashing lights faded down the dark road, leaving the estate in serene, quiet peace once more.

Caleb turned around.

Julia was standing at the bottom of the grand staircase, holding Landon’s hand.

Caleb walked over to them, dropping down on his knees in front of Julia. He reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a small, velvet box.
