Chapter 5 - A Shadow in the Boardroom
The truth hit Alexander like a physical blow. His father, the cold patriarch who had molded him into a machine, had driven away his brother's only child.
"You've been working in my house for a year," Alexander realized, his voice trembling slightly. "Why here?"
"Hidden in plain sight," Maria whispered. "I needed a good salary to pay for Maya’s medical bills—she has a weak heart, a genetic trait from Julian. I thought the last place your father would look for us was under your roof, since you never notice anyone around you anyway."
Alexander felt a profound sense of shame. She was right. He had been so consumed by his own grief and work that he hadn't noticed his own niece cleaning his floors.
But their conversation was cut short by the buzzing of his phone. It was his corporate legal team.

An anonymous whistle-blower has leaked information to the board alleging that you are harboring an illegal minor in your residence and utilizing company funds for personal payouts to domestic staff. The board is calling for an emergency session. Your uncle, Arthur, is moving to oust you as CEO.”
Alexander’s eyes narrowed. Arthur Reed. His father’s brother, a greedy snake who had been trying to seize control of Reed Industries for a decade. Somehow, Arthur had gotten wind of Maria and Maya, and he was going to use them to destroy Alexander.
