Chapter 10 - A Whole New World
One year after the wedding on the beach, the Whitfield estate was hosting a massive summer charity gala for the Claire & Maria Child Protection Foundation. The gardens were filled with hundreds of guests, string musicians playing near the rose bushes, and long tables covered in exquisite food and flowing champagne.
Daniel stood on the grand terrace, a glass of sparkling water in his hand, watching the festive crowd. He looked completely at peace. The cutthroat tech tycoon who used to live solely for the next merger was gone, replaced by a philanthropist, a devoted husband, and a profoundly happy father.
Maria walked up behind him, wrapping her arms around his waist, resting her chin against his shoulder. She looked stunning in a sapphire blue evening gown. "The foundation raised over three million dollars tonight, Daniel. We’re going to be able to fund the new medical legal clinics in three more states."
"That’s incredible, beautiful," Daniel smiled, turning around in her arms to press a tender kiss to her forehead. "But right now, I’m more interested in where our daughter is. She was supposed to be in bed twenty minutes ago."
"Look down there," Maria giggled, pointing toward the edge of the manicured lawn near the big oak tree.
Down in the garden, Sophia, now four years old, was the absolute center of attention. She had managed to escape her nanny, her white dress slightly smudged with grass stains, and was currently showing a group of distinguished, high-ranking federal judges how to perform a flawless cartwheel in the grass. The judges were laughing hysterically, completely charmed by the little girl's unstoppable energy.
Daniel shook his head, a bright, booming laugh escaping his chest. "She definitely gets her corporate negotiation skills from me. Look at her commanding that room."
"And she gets her wild spirit from Claire," Maria added softly, her eyes full of a warm, peaceful nostalgia. "She carries the best of all of us, Daniel."
Suddenly, Sophia spotted her parents standing on the terrace. She broke away from her audience, her little legs moving as fast as they could carry her, her curls bouncing in the warm summer breeze. She sprinted up the stone steps, her arms wide open, her face lit up with that same, beautiful, life-changing smile.
