Chapter 3 - The Boardroom Shadow

The next morning, the sun rose over the Whitfield estate, casting long, golden shadows across the stone driveway. Daniel hadn't slept a single wink. He had spent the entire night alternating between studying the clinic documents and staring at the closed door of the staff quarters where Sophia was sleeping.

At 8:00 AM, his phone rang. It was his chief legal counsel, Marcus Vance (no relation to the doctor), his voice sounding clipped and anxious.

"Daniel, we have a major problem," Marcus said without preamble. "An anonymous tip was leaked to the Securities and Exchange Commission two hours ago. Someone is alleging that you have hidden liabilities regarding your personal estate, specifically involving an illegal medical operation and an undocumented child living on your property. The rumors are already hitting the trading floors. Our stock price dipped four percent in pre-market trading."

Daniel gripped the phone, his jaw tightening until it clicked. "It’s Pendelton, Marcus. He’s the one pulling the strings."

"Arthur Pendelton? How could he possibly know anything about your personal life?"

"Because his brother-in-law is the director of the fertility clinic that completely botched—or rather, intentionally manipulated—my late wife's IVF records," Daniel explained, his voice cold as ice. "They stole my daughter, Marcus. They gave her to my housekeeper to hide the evidence, and now that they realize I'm on the verge of the Singapore merger, they're using her existence to paint me as unstable, or worse, a criminal."

"Good God," Marcus whispered, completely stunned. "Daniel... if this goes public in the wrong way, the board of directors could invoke the morality clause in your contract. They could strip you of your voting rights and force you out of your own company before the merger closes at the end of the week."

"They can try," Daniel said, his eyes flashing with a dangerous, predatory spark. "Gather the core legal team. I want a private, off-the-record DNA test arranged for this afternoon. Use our private medical contractor. No papers, no digital records until I say so. And Marcus? Tell the board that if anyone mentions my family, I will personally dismantle their portfolios before sundown."

Daniel hung up the phone and walked downstairs. In the dining room, Sophia was sitting in a high chair, happily tossing pieces of pancake onto the floor while Maria frantically tried to clean up after her.

When Sophia saw Daniel walk in, her face lit up with an angelic, gap-toothed smile. "Daddy! Look! Doggy!" She pointed to a picture of a puppy on her plastic plate.

Daniel felt a strange, profound warmth bloom in his chest, melting the icy armor he had worn since Claire’s death. He walked over to the high chair, completely ignoring the syrup-covered fingers Sophia extended toward him, and let her grab his pristine white cuff.

"Good morning, Sophia," Daniel said softly, a genuine, rare smile breaking across his handsome face. He looked at Maria, whose eyes were red-rimmed from crying. "Maria, pack a bag for you and the baby. We’re leaving the estate for a few days. It's no longer safe here."
