Chapter 2 - The Stolen Legacy

The silence that followed Maria’s confession was absolute. Daniel felt the air leave his lungs, his mind violently rejecting the words his ears had just heard, even as every instinct in his soul screamed that it was the absolute truth.
He stood up so fast his heavy leather chair slid backward, crashing against the mahogany bookshelf. "That’s impossible. It’s illegal. It’s a medical impossibility. The paperwork... I signed the storage renewal fees every year!"
"The paperwork you signed was forged by the clinic’s legal board, Daniel!" Maria cried out, using his first name for the very first time, stripped of her professional restraint by sheer desperation. "They sent you fake receipts. They told you the embryo was safely in cryo-storage while it was already growing inside me! I didn't know, I swear to you I didn't know until six months ago when a whistleblower from the clinic contacted me with the real medical logs. I was terrified. I took this job at your mansion just to see what kind of man you were... to see if you were a monster who would rip my baby away from me!"
Daniel walked over to the floor-to-ceiling window, staring out at the sprawling, perfectly manicured gardens of his estate. His hands were shaking. Claire’s child. The baby they had prayed for, wept for, and fought for through years of failed fertility treatments. The child he thought had died alongside his beautiful wife three years ago wasn't gone. She was downstairs, eating a cookie in his kitchen, wearing pigtails and a blue dress.
"Why didn't you tell me the moment you found out?" Daniel asked, his back still turned to her, his voice dangerously low.
"Because you are a billionaire, and I am a penniless immigrant housekeeper!" Maria sobbed, collapsing onto the small sofa in the corner of the room. "If I told you, your high-priced corporate lawyers would have drawn up custody papers before the sun went down. You would have taken her, and I would have been left with nothing. I love her, Daniel. I carried her for nine months. I felt her kick. I stayed up with her through every fever, every tooth cutting through her gums. She might have Claire’s DNA, but she is my daughter too!"
Daniel turned around slowly. The anger that usually flared up when he was deceived was completely absent. In its place was a profound, aching sorrow, mixed with a sudden, overwhelming protective instinct. He saw the raw, maternal terror in Maria’s eyes—the fierce, unyielding love she held for the little girl.
"I need to see the documents, Maria. Everything the whistleblower gave you," Daniel said, his voice steadying as his analytical mind began to take control of the chaos.
Maria nodded quickly, wiping her tears. "I have them hidden in my room in the staff quarters. I’ll get them."
Ten minutes later, the desk was covered in clinical printouts, embryology logs, and genetic sequencing reports bearing the official seal of the St. Jude Fertility Center. Daniel scanned the pages, his eyes narrowing as he recognized his own medical ID number, alongside Claire’s signature, cross-referenced with Maria Alvarez's patient chart from three years ago. The evidence was irrefutable. Sophia was genetically 100% his and Claire’s child.

But as Daniel stared at the signature of the clinic director who had authorized the illegal procedure—Dr. Victor Vance—a dark, cold realization washed over him. Dr. Vance wasn't just a rogue medical professional. He was the brother-in-law of Arthur Pendelton, Daniel’s primary rival and the CEO of Pendelton Tech, a ruthless corporation that had been trying to launch a hostile takeover of Daniel's company for the past six months.
This wasn't just a tragic medical mistake. It was a calculated, weaponized secret, waiting to be used to destroy him.
