Chapter 5 - The Shadow Board

At two o'clock in the morning, the mansion was quiet. Layla was fast asleep in a plush bedroom adjacent to Vanessa's, guarded by two female security operatives stationed outside her door.

Vanessa couldn't sleep. Wrapped in a silk robe, she walked down the grand spiral staircase into the main study.

The room was illuminated by the warm light of a floor-to-ceiling fireplace and six large computer monitors mounted on the wall. Jaxson sat behind a heavy ironwood desk, his navy jacket gone, wearing a tight black tactical shirt that showcased the thick scars running up his arms and neck.

He was reviewing financial spreadsheets and surveillance feeds from Whitmore Dynamics.

"You should be resting," Jaxson said without looking up from his screen.

"I can't sleep," Vanessa said, walking over to the fireplace. "Every time I close my eyes, I hear that shattering glass... and I see that blue light inside her ear."

Jaxson stopped typing. He leaned back in his leather chair, watching her. "It’s called the Acoustic Suppression Unit Model-4. It was developed by Vanguard Armaments four years ago under a classified black-budget contract with the Department of Defense."

"How did Chester get his hands on medical military tech?" Vanessa asked, turning to face him. "My father ran Whitmore Dynamics with absolute integrity. We make prosthetics, surgical tools, artificial heart valves... we don't make weapons."

"Your father didn't," Jaxson corrected her smoothly. "But Chester Aldrich did. For the last five years, Chester has been using Whitmore's offshore subsidiaries in Panama to launder money for Vanguard Armaments. They were developing neural jammers, sonic weapons, and biological tracking devices."

He clicked his mouse, and a large organizational chart appeared on the main monitor.

At the top was the emblem of Vanguard Armaments. Directly below it were three photos: Chester Aldrich, Dr. Samuel Vance, and a man in a high-ranking military uniform named General Richard Vance—the doctor's older brother.

"They didn't just want control of Whitmore Dynamics," Jaxson revealed, his voice dark and steady. "Your father discovered the money laundering three weeks before his plane crash. He was going to turn the evidence over to the Department of Justice."

Vanessa’s breath caught in her throat. Her hands shook as she gripped the back of a leather chair. "My father’s plane didn't crash because of an engine failure, did it?"

"No," Jaxson said, standing up and walking around the desk until he stood three feet away from her. "The flight recorder was wiped using the same acoustic EMP technology that was placed in your daughter’s ear. They killed your father, Vanessa. And then they targeted Layla because your father left his master encryption key inside her trust fund accounts."

Vanessa felt the ground slipping beneath her feet. Her father hadn't died in a tragedy—he had been murdered. And her child had been tortured for six years to keep a corporate conspiracy alive.

Rage—pure, white-hot, unrelenting rage—washed through Vanessa’s veins, replacing all her fear.

She stepped closer to Jaxson, looking directly into his cold gray eyes.

"I want them destroyed," she whispered, her voice laced with iron. "Every single one of them. Chester, the doctor, Vanguard Armaments... I want them brought down until there is nothing left of their names."

A slow, dark smile touched Jaxson Drake’s lips. It was the smile of a king who had finally found a queen worthy of his throne.

"That," Jaxson said low, reaching out to gently touch her chin, "is a promise I can easily fulfill."
