Chapter 9 - The Claiming

The evening came swiftly, blanketing the estate in a warm twilight glow.
After dinner, Liam and Layla were in the grand living room, curled up on a massive plush sofa in front of the roaring fireplace, watching an animated movie. Layla’s head rested comfortably on Liam’s shoulder, both children fast asleep under a heavy wool blanket.
Vanessa stood by the floor-to-ceiling glass windows overlooking the lake, watching the moon reflect off the water.
Jaxson walked up behind her. He didn't say a word; he simply wrapped his broad, powerful arms around her waist, pulling her back firmly against his muscular chest.
Vanessa rested her head back against his shoulder, letting out a soft, contented sigh. She felt completely safe, completely cherished, and entirely whole.
"I spoke to my legal team this afternoon," Vanessa murmured, her hands resting over his heavy forearms.
"And?" Jaxson asked, his breath warm against her neck.
"We finalized the merger between Whitmore Dynamics and Drake Security Logistics," she revealed, turning around in his arms to look up into his face. "We are now the largest medical-defense technology enterprise in North America."
Jaxson smiled, a real, genuine grin that transformed his harsh, scarred features into something devastatingly handsome. "So you're saying I work for you now, CEO Whitmore?"
"No," Vanessa whispered, her fingers reaching up to touch the faint scar on his eyebrow, tracing it down to his jawline. "I'm saying we're partners. In everything."
Jaxson’s expression deepened, his gray eyes darkening with profound emotion. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, velvet-lined box.
Vanessa gasped softly, her breath hitching in her throat.
Jaxson opened the box. Inside lay a breathtaking ring—a rare, flawless blue diamond set in a band of hand-carved platinum, surrounded by smaller brilliant white diamonds that sparkled like the stars over the lake.
"This diamond belonged to my grandmother," Jaxson said softly, his voice rough with emotion. "She wore it through forty years of hardship, war, and rebuilding. I swore I would only give it to a woman who possessed the courage of a lion and the heart of an angel."
He took her left hand, holding it gently in his.
"Vanessa Whitmore," Jaxson said, looking into her eyes with a love so absolute, so fierce, that it wiped away every painful memory of her past. "Will you marry me? Will you let me protect you, love you, and build a life with you and our children forever?"
Tears of pure, overwhelming joy spilled down Vanessa’s cheeks. She didn't hesitate for a single second.

"Yes," Vanessa choked out, her voice filled with happiness. "Yes, Jaxson! Yes!"
Jaxson slid the blue diamond ring onto her finger—a perfect fit. He pulled her into his arms, lifting her slightly off her feet, and kissed her with a deep, possessive passion that made the world fade away completely.
