Chapter 10 - The Warmth of Home

Three years later.
The summer sun shone brightly over the Whitaker estate, painting the gardens in brilliant hues of green, gold, and pink.
The grand terrace, once a cold marble stage for high-society pretenses, had been completely redesigned. A sprawling, custom-built wooden playground now sat on the edge of the lawn, featuring swings, a slide, and a large sandbox.
Sitting on a comfortable outdoor sofa under the shade of a large umbrella was Grace. She wore a simple yellow sundress, her hair tied back in a loose braid. In her arms, she held a four-month-old baby girl with dark blue eyes and a head full of soft dark hair—clara, named in loving memory of Evan’s late first wife.
Nearby, ten-year-old Sophie sat at a wooden picnic table, helping six-year-old Caleb build a massive Lego castle. Caleb’s brown rabbit, now heavily patched with multiple colors of thread, sat proudly atop the central Lego tower as the castle's royal knight.
The back doors of the mansion opened, and Evan walked out onto the terrace.
He no longer looked like the exhausted, grief-stricken billionaire who had hidden behind a fake gray beard and mud-stained boots. His face was relaxed, full of life, and his eyes held a permanent warmth. He wore a casual linen shirt and khaki shorts, carrying a tray filled with tall glasses of lemonade and fresh fruit.
"Lemonade delivery!" Evan announced, setting the tray down on the picnic table.
"Thanks, Dad!" Sophie smiled, reaching for a glass before going back to instructions for the Lego castle.
Caleb grabbed a slice of watermelon, taking a big, messy bite. "Look, Daddy! Bunny is defending the castle from dragons!"
"Bunny is doing a fine job, buddy," Evan laughed, patting Caleb’s head.
Evan walked over to the sofa, sitting down beside Grace. He wrapped his arm around her shoulders, pulling her close, and leaned down to kiss her cheek before gently touching his newborn daughter’s tiny hand.
Little Clara cooed, her small fingers wrapping securely around Evan’s thumb.
"How is she?" Evan asked softly.
"She just fed," Grace replied, leaning her head against Evan’s shoulder, a deep, peaceful sigh escaping her lips. "She’s getting sleepy."
Evan looked out across the sunny lawn, watching his older children laugh and play together, their voices bright and free of any shadow from the past. He looked at Grace, the courageous woman who had stepped out of the shadows to protect his family, and at the baby girl cradled in her arms.
"What are you thinking about?" Grace asked softly, turning her head to look at him.
Evan smiled, reaching out to gently trace the side of her face, his thumb brushing over her soft skin.
"I was just thinking about eleven days in the dirt," Evan confessed quietly, his voice full of infinite tenderness. "I thought I went into those gardens to catch a villain... but I ended up finding the love of my life."
Grace smiled—a beautiful, radiant smile that lit up his entire world. She reached up, kissing his lips sweetly as the warm summer breeze rustled through the rose bushes.

"You found your home, Evan," Grace whispered against his lips. "And we are never letting you go."
As the sun began its slow descent behind the Greenwich hills, casting a warm, golden glow over the estate, the sound of children’s laughter filled the air—a sweet, permanent song of a family whole, safe, and finally home.
