Chapter 9 - The Proposal

A year after the nightmare on the terrace, the Greenwich estate prepared for a very different kind of celebration.

It was a crisp, clear Saturday evening in late May. The sprawling terrace, once the site of Vanessa’s cruel downfall, had been transformed into a magical garden setting. String lights hung from the stone pillars, casting a warm, amber glow across tables adorned with fresh white roses and lavender.

There were no press reporters, no high-society hypocrites, and no corporate donors present.

The only guests were the people who mattered: Mrs. Gable, Arthur the butler, the estate’s security staff, Grace’s elderly aunt who had flown in from Ohio, and the children.

At seven o'clock, Evan walked out onto the terrace wearing a sharp black tuxedo. Beside him, three-year-old Caleb wore a matching mini-tuxedo, complete with a tiny red bow tie, still holding his brown rabbit—which now wore a tiny matching red ribbon around its neck.

Sophie stepped out onto the terrace wearing a lovely light blue dress, carrying a basket of rose petals.

Then came Grace.

She stepped through the french doors, looking breathtaking in an elegant, off-the-shoulder emerald green gown that accentuated her emerald eyes and graceful figure. Her dark hair was styled in soft waves, and a simple diamond pendant—a gift from Evan—glistened at her throat.

As she walked toward the center of the terrace, Evan’s breath caught in his throat. He had seen powerful world leaders, celebrities, and billionaires, but nothing in his life had ever looked as stunning as the woman walking toward him.

"You look incredible," Evan whispered as she reached his side.

"You don't look so bad yourself, Mr. Whitaker," Grace smiled, her eyes sparkling.

Evan turned to face her, taking both of her hands in his. The small crowd gathered on the terrace grew quiet, the gentle breeze rustling through the nearby trees.

"Grace," Evan began, his voice deep, steady, and filled with an intense, unwavering emotion. "A year ago, this terrace was a place of darkness for my family. It was a place where my children were afraid to speak, and where I felt completely alone in protecting them."

Grace looked into his eyes, her fingers tightening around his.

"Then you stepped between my daughter and a blow," Evan continued, tears glistening in his eyes. "You didn't know who I was. You didn't care about my money or my name. You only cared about protecting two innocent children. Over the last year, you didn't just protect this house—you brought it back to life. You healed my children's hearts, and you healed mine."

Evan let go of her hands and dropped down onto one knee on the smooth marble floor.

Caleb immediately waddled over, handing his father a small, black velvet box.

Sophie stepped up beside Grace, taking her hand and looking up at her with big, hopeful eyes. "Say yes, Grace! Please!"

Evan opened the box, revealing a magnificent ring featuring an antique-cut diamond set in platinum, surrounded by two smaller sapphires representing Sophie and Caleb.

"Grace Miller," Evan said, his voice rough with emotion. "Will you do us the honor of becoming my wife, the mother of my children, and the queen of this house forever?"

Grace pressed a hand against her mouth as tears spilled over her lashes, sparkling like diamonds in the string lights. She looked down at Evan, then at Sophie and Caleb, who were bouncing on their toes with excitement.

"Yes!" Grace cried out, her voice filled with pure joy. "Yes, Evan! A thousand times yes!"

Evan stood up, sliding the ring onto her finger before pulling her into his arms and lifting her slightly off her feet as he kissed her deeply.

The crowd erupted into cheers and applause. Mrs. Gable wiped her eyes with her apron, while Arthur the butler discreetly dabbed at his eyes with a silk handkerchief.

Sophie and Caleb threw their arms around Evan and Grace’s legs, joining the hug, their laughter filling the night air.
