Chapter 5 - The Stamford Courthouse

The Stamford Family Court building was a imposing structure of gray granite and darkened glass. Paparazzi and news vans lined the steps, their long camera lenses flashing like fireflies as Evan’s convoy of dark SUVs pulled up to the curb.

Evan stepped out, flanked by Pendelton and three junior attorneys. He wore a dark navy charcoal suit, immaculate white shirt, and a dark blue tie. His expression was impassive, ignoring the shouted questions from reporters.

"Mr. Whitaker! Is it true you spent two weeks in a shed?!"

"Evan! Did Vanessa Vale steal millions from your children?!"

"Are you fighting for full custody today?!"

Evan walked straight past them, through the security scanners, and up to the third-floor family court division.

Standing outside courtroom 302 was Judge Richard Vale. The elder Vale was a tall, distinguished-looking man with silver hair, tailored clothes, and an aura of supreme confidence that matched his daughter’s. Beside him stood Vanessa, wearing a conservative black high-necked dress, her eyes downturned in a carefully crafted display of victimhood.

As Evan approached, Judge Vale stepped forward, blocking the hallway entrance.

"Evan," the older man said, his voice resonant and commanding. "Let's be reasonable before we enter that courtroom. This circus is destroying my family's name and damaging your company's stock."

Evan stopped three feet away, his hands resting naturally in his suit pockets. "Your daughter abused my children in my own home, Richard."

"Vanessa made an error in judgment under extreme stress!" Judge Vale countered, his tone dropping to a low, stern whisper. "She was overwhelmed! You abandoned her in that massive estate to handle two grieving, traumatized children alone while you played games!"

"I wasn't playing games," Evan said, his voice ice-cold. "I was gathering evidence because I knew a man like you would use every judicial favor you owed to bury the truth."

"Listen to me very carefully, Whitaker," Judge Vale warned, leaning in closer, his eyes narrowing behind his gold-rimmed glasses. "I have sat on the bench in this state for twenty-four years. I know every judge, every prosecutor, and every family court referee in Connecticut. If you push this to a trial, I will drag your late wife’s medical history into the public record. I will make sure the court questions your emotional stability. You will be tied up in litigation until those children are adults."

Vanessa looked up from behind her father, offering Evan a small, triumphant smirk—the same cruel smile she had worn on the terrace before striking Grace.

"Are you finished?" Evan asked calmly.

Judge Vale frowned. "What?"

Evan turned to Pendelton, who pulled a leather document holder from his briefcase and handed it to Evan.

Evan didn't open it. He simply handed it to Judge Vale.

"What is this?" the judge demanded.

"That is an emergency federal indictment issued twenty minutes ago by the United States District Court for the Southern District of New York," Evan explained, his voice echoing clearly down the marble hallway. "It charges you, Richard Vale, with judicial corruption, laundering stolen funds through Vale Holdings, and aiding in the embezzlement of a federal minor's trust."

Judge Vale’s face turned from red to an unsightly, ash-gray. His hands began to shake as he opened the folder, scanning the federal seal and the signature of a senior federal prosecutor.

"This... this is impossible..." Vale stammered. "You can't..."

"I didn't just record Vanessa, Richard," Evan whispered, leaning in so only the judge and Vanessa could hear. "I bought the bank that manages your shell company yesterday morning. I own your debt, I own your mortgage, and by five o'clock today, the federal marshals will own your judicial robe."

Vanessa’s smirk collapsed into absolute terror. She grabbed her father’s arm. "Dad? Dad, what is he talking about?! Do something!"

The heavy oak doors of Courtroom 302 opened, and an officer announced, "The court is now in session. All rise for Judge Thomas."

Evan buttoned his suit jacket, looking down at the broken, trembling father and daughter standing before him.

"We don't need a custody hearing today, Richard," Evan said smoothly, turning toward the courtroom doors. "You two have a federal arraignment to prepare for."
