Chapter 4 - The Unseen Wounds

Outside on the eastern lawn, the morning sun was warm, burning away the crisp autumn chill.
A small wooden table had been set up under the shade of an old oak tree. Sophie sat on a small plastic chair, carefully pouring imaginary tea from a pink teapot into three tiny cups. Caleb sat beside her, meticulously lining up four wooden toy cars along the edge of the blanket.
Evan walked across the lawn, shedding his dark suit jacket and rolling up his shirt sleeves. He sat down cross-legged directly on the grass beside them.
"Is there room for one more at the table, Princess?" Evan asked gently.
Sophie looked up, her big brown eyes still carrying a shadow of caution that hadn't been there two months ago. "Only if you drink the blueberry tea. Caleb drank all the strawberry tea."
"Blueberry is my favorite," Evan smiled, taking the tiny plastic cup she offered him with incredible care, holding it with his pinky finger extended. He took a dramatic, noisy sip. "Mmm! Delicious. A little heavy on the imaginary sugar, though."
Sophie giggled—a sound so pure and sweet that it made Evan’s chest ache with gratitude.
Caleb picked up his brown rabbit and pressed it against Evan’s arm. "Bunny wants tea too, Daddy."
"Of course," Evan said, gently taking the rabbit’s paw and dipping it toward a cup. "Bunny gets the first refill."
Grace approached the lawn carrying a tray of actual food—fresh blueberry muffins, sliced apples, and real orange juice. She set the tray down on the corner of the blanket, nodding respectfully to Evan.
"The children slept six hours straight last night, Mr. Whitaker," Grace reported softly so the kids wouldn't hear. "No nightmares from Caleb for the first time in three weeks."
Evan looked at Grace, noticing how easily she interacted with his children. She didn't talk down to them or treat them like fragile glass, yet every movement she made was designed to make them feel secure.
"Sit with us, Grace," Evan invited, gesturing to the blanket.
Grace hesitated. "Sir, I'm on duty. Security details—"
"Security details can eat muffins," Evan insisted gently. "Please. Sophie, pour Grace some tea."
Sophie immediately filled another tiny cup, handing it to Grace with a serious expression. "You have to drink it slow, Ms. Grace. It's very hot."
Grace’s eyes softened, a rare, tender expression breaking through her professional demeanor. She sat down smoothly on the grass, accepting the tiny cup. "Thank you, Sophie. I'll be very careful."
As they sat together under the oak tree, the sound of laughter filling the air, Evan’s personal phone buzzed in his pocket. He pulled it out, seeing an encrypted text message from Pendelton:
VALE HAS FILED FOR EMERGENCY CUSTODY INJUNCTION CLAIMING UNSTABLE HOUSEHOLD ENVIRONMENT. HEARING SET FOR 2 PM TODAY AT STAMFORD FAMILY COURT.
Evan’s jaw tightened. He looked at his children, who were currently trying to feed Caleb’s wooden cars a muffin crumb.
Vanessa wasn't just trying to defend herself against criminal charges; she was attempting a desperate, legal counter-offensive to force Evan into a settlement by threatening to entangle his children in a public family court nightmare.
Evan stood up quietly, kissing the tops of Sophie and Caleb’s heads.

"Daddy has to take care of a quick business meeting," Evan told them softly. He looked at Grace, his eyes holding a clear, unspoken command. "Keep them inside the gates. Double the guard at the perimeter."
Grace stood up, her hand instinctively touching the secure radio hidden under her cardigan. "No one gets near them, Mr. Whitaker. Go win your war."
