CHAPTER 2 — THE WOMAN AT THE GATE

Victoria Lane didn’t run.

She walked.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

Like she had never lost control of anything in her life.

Behind her back, something metallic caught the sunlight.

Ethan flinched immediately.

Liam buried his face into my arm.

Noah started shaking harder.

And Richard—

Richard stopped breathing.

“Victoria…” Richard’s voice cracked. “What did you do?”

She smiled.

Not warmly.

Not kindly.

But like someone watching a problem finally simplify itself.

“I handled a situation,” she said.

I pulled the boys behind me instinctively.

“What did you do to them?” I demanded.

Victoria tilted her head.

“Oh, relax,” she said softly.

“They’re dramatic like their mother.”

That word—

mother

made Richard flinch.

Ethan’s voice trembled.

“She locked us in the dark room, Daddy…”

Noah nodded quickly.

“She said Miss Emily stole things… but she put them in her bag…”

Liam raised his bleeding arm.

“She said nobody would believe us.”

Silence fell.

Richard turned slowly toward Victoria.

Not anger yet.

Not fully.

Just disbelief trying to survive.

“You told me she stole from me,” he said.

Victoria sighed.

“I told you what you needed to hear.”

That sentence changed everything.

Even the air felt different after it.

Richard stepped closer.

“You framed her.”

Victoria didn’t deny it.

Instead, she corrected him.

“I protected you.”

That was the moment I understood something chilling.

She didn’t see herself as a villain.

She saw herself as ownership.

Of him.

Of the house.

Of the children.

Of everything.

And then she smiled at me.

“You should leave,” she said quietly.

“You’ve already been fired.”

The boys clung tighter to me.

But I didn’t move.

Because something inside me had shifted.

Fear was still there.

But so was clarity.

“You’re hurting them,” I said.

Victoria blinked slowly.

“They are not mine to hurt,” she replied.

A pause.

“They are inconvenient obstacles.”

Richard snapped.

“Victoria, stop.”

But she didn’t even look at him.

She was watching me.

Like I was the next problem to remove.

“You’ve been very attached to them,” she said to me.

“That’s unfortunate.”

May you like

Then she took one step forward.

And the boys screamed.
