CHAPTER 4 — THE HOUSE THAT TURNED AGAINST ITS OWNER
Everything happened at once.
Richard moved in front of Victoria.
I pulled the boys back.
Victoria stopped smiling.
“Don’t make this difficult,” she said.
Richard’s voice shook.
“You’ve been alone with my children too often.”
Victoria sighed.
“I’ve been managing your household,” she corrected.
“Someone had to replace the mother you lost.”
That sentence landed like a slap.
Richard froze.
For the first time, I saw confusion break through his authority.
“You never replaced her,” I said quietly.
All eyes turned to me.
Even Victoria’s.
“You just tolerated what you couldn’t control,” I continued.
“And I was the only one keeping them safe from you.”
Richard’s face hardened.
“Emily—”
But Ethan interrupted him.
“No, Dad!” he cried.
“She’s telling the truth!”
Noah nodded rapidly.
“She says bad things about us when you’re gone!”
Liam whispered:
“She scares us.”
Silence again.
But this time, it wasn’t confusion.
It was fracture.
Richard looked at his sons.
Really looked at them.
Like he was seeing them for the first time in a long time.
“Victoria,” he said slowly.
“Tell me that’s not true.”
Victoria smiled faintly.
“They’re children,” she said.
“They misunderstand tone.”
That was all she gave him.
Not denial.
Not explanation.
Dismissal.
And something in Richard broke.
Not loudly.
Quietly.
But permanently.
He turned toward me.
“Emily,” he said.
“Take the boys inside the house.”
Victoria’s eyes sharpened instantly.
“No,” she said.
“This is still my engagement home.”
Richard didn’t look at her.
“Not anymore.”
For the first time, Victoria’s expression cracked slightly.
Not fear.
Anger.
“You don’t understand what you’re doing,” she said.
Richard finally faced her.
“I think I do,” he replied.
“And I think I should have seen it sooner.”
The boys didn’t wait.
They grabbed my hands.
“Miss Emily, don’t leave us again,” Ethan whispered.
I looked at Richard.
He nodded once.
A permission.
A surrender.
And I walked them back inside the mansion.
Not as a servant.
