Chapter 1 - The Shattered Glass

The echo of the fall had barely subsided before the silence in the grand ballroom of the St. Regis Hotel became absolute.
Heavy crystal chandeliers cast a warm, golden glow over two hundred elite guests frozen in place. On the landing halfway up the grand marble staircase, the woman in the emerald green gown—Victoria Vance—stood with her chest heaving. Champagne dripped from the hem of her designer dress onto the white stone. Her hands were still raised slightly, her manicured fingers trembling despite the fierce, triumphant sneer pinned to her lips.
At the bottom of the staircase lay Serena Croft.
Serena was six months pregnant, dressed in a soft powder-blue silk gown now stained with red wine and champagne. Her crystal clutch lay shattered three feet away, its contents—a lipstick, a compact mirror, and a small silver key—scattered across the polished floor. Serena was lying on her side, her face pale, her hands instinctively cradling her round belly like a shield.
"It... it was an accident!" Victoria’s voice pierced the silence, shrill and artificially calm as she looked down at the crowd. She pointed dramatically toward a wet patch on the top step. "She slipped! She was drunk and carrying a full glass! I reached out to grab her wrist to save her, but she fell!"
Whispers rippled through the crowd like wind through dry leaves.
"Is she breathing?" someone shouted from the back.
"Call an ambulance!" a woman shrieked.
Victoria smoothed her emerald skirt, taking two slow, deliberate steps down the stairs, her dark eyes scanning the room to ensure no one was questioning her narrative. "I tried to help her. Everyone saw it! She was clumsy!"
Down on the floor, Serena let out a raspy, painful gasp. Her body shivered, but she didn't look at Victoria. She didn't look at the shocked faces of the city’s high-society elite staring down at her.
Instead, Serena’s blood-stained fingers slowly reached out under the heavy velvet tablecloth of a nearby cocktail table.
Her fingers closed around a sleek, dark smartphone. Its screen was black, but a microscopic green dot near the top camera lens indicated that a background recording app had been running continuously.
Serena pulled the phone to her chest, her breathing shallow, and pressed the lock button twice.
The massive wall-mounted digital display behind the main stage—which had been playing a continuous loop of the charity foundation’s promotional slides—suddenly flickered. The high-definition audio system built into the ballroom’s acoustic ceiling let out a loud, electronic chime.
Victoria stopped dead on the fourth step. The smug confidence drained from her face so rapidly she looked as if she had seen a ghost.
A deep, crisp voice echoed from the speakers—not Serena’s voice, and not Victoria’s, but a cold, calculated male voice that made the room freeze.
"If the baby dies tonight, Victoria, your father gets thirty percent of the shipping conglomerate, and you get the trust fund. But if Serena survives to give birth, Arthur’s will automatically transfers sixty percent of the voting shares to the child. You know what you have to do before midnight."
Then came Victoria’s recorded response, crystal clear, unedited, and lethal:
"Don't worry, Julian. She won't walk out of this ballroom pregnant."
A collective, violent gasp erupted across the ballroom.
Victoria turned her head toward the stage display screen, her mouth opening in sheer terror. "No! Turn it off! THAT'S A FAKE RECORDING! TURN IT OFF!"
Before she could take another step, a tall, imposing figure in a tailored charcoal suit shoved his way through the frozen crowd, his dark eyes burning with an unholy fury.
Julian Sterling—the man whose voice had just played over the speakers—watched in terror as his elder brother, Harrison Sterling, sprinted past him straight toward the foot of the stairs.
Harrison dropped to his knees on the hard marble, his hands shaking violently as he gathered Serena into his arms.
"Serena!" Harrison’s voice cracked, a rare display of raw, terrifying vulnerability from a billionaire CEO who had never once lost his composure in public. "Serena, look at me! Stay awake! Don't you dare close your eyes!"
"Harrison..." Serena whispered, her bloody fingers clutching his lapels, holding up the dark phone. "The video... it captured... Julian's face..."

Harrison turned his head toward the stairs. His gaze locked onto Victoria, then shifted to his younger brother Julian, who was already retreating toward the rear exits.
"Close the doors," Harrison roared, his voice cutting through the panic like a thunderclap. "SECURITY! SEAL EVERY EXIT IN THIS BUILDING!"
