Chapter 7 - The Sanctuary at Cliff House

The Cliff House in Portland, Maine, was a historic stone sanctuary built high above the crashing white waves of the Atlantic Ocean.
Surrounded by dense pine forests and protected by a private three-mile gated driveway, it was a place where the chaotic noise of Chicago's high-society gossip could never reach.
For the next two months, the world stopped for Harrison and Serena.
Harrison handed temporary operational control of Sterling Maritime over to his trusted senior vice president, stepping down from daily corporate duties for the first time in fifteen years. He moved his desk into the sunlit conservatory at the edge of the cliff house, working remotely for two hours a day while spending every remaining moment beside Serena.
Every morning, the sun would rise over the ocean, casting a brilliant golden light across the master bedroom suite.
Serena sat in a cozy velvet recliner near the floor-to-ceiling windows, wrapped in a soft cashmere blanket, reading books on child development while watching the white seagulls glide over the ocean waves.
Harrison walked into the room carrying a tray containing fresh strawberries, warm oatmeal, and a cup of decaf herbal tea.
"Your 9:00 AM breakfast delivery, Mrs. Sterling," Harrison said smoothly, setting the tray on the small table beside her chair.
Serena smiled, her face radiant, healthy, and full of life. The dark circles under her eyes were gone, replaced by a soft, motherly glow. "You know, Harrison, if you keep pampering me like this, I'm never going to let you go back to work."
"Good," Harrison murmured, pulling up a footstool and sitting beside her legs, leaning his head against her arm. "Because I have no intention of ever letting you out of my sight again."
He reached out, placing his palm over her massive, nine-month pregnant belly.
Suddenly, a distinct, firm kick pressed against his palm.
Harrison gasped, his eyes widening in pure delight. "Did you feel that? She just kicked my hand!"
Serena laughed—a light, sweet sound that echoed through the sunlit room. "She's been kicking all morning. I think she knows her father is soft on her."

"She's going to be spoiled rotten," Harrison admitted without a shred of guilt, leaning down to press a tender kiss directly onto her stomach. "She's going to have everything she ever wants. But most importantly... she's going to have a mother who fought through hell to bring her into this world."
Serena reached down, her fingers stroking Harrison’s cheek, looking out at the peaceful blue ocean. "The hell is behind us now, Harrison. We made it."
