Chapter 5 - The Snake's Last Card

Julian’s lead attorney stood up hastily, putting a hand on Julian’s shoulder to keep him quiet.

"Mr. Sterling," the attorney said smoothly, "these diary entries are fascinating, but they are legally unverified personal notes. They hold no weight in a probate court without direct forensic corroboration. Under the terms of Arthur Sterling's 2022 Will, my client still holds twenty-five percent of the voting shares. You cannot remove him from the board without a two-thirds majority."

"I don't need a two-thirds majority," Harrison replied, pulling a fresh white document from his coat pocket.

He slid it across the glass table.

"That is a certified copy of Serena Croft’s legal marriage certificate," Harrison revealed. "We were married in secret in New London four months ago."

The board members gasped.

"Under father’s original founding charter," Harrison explained, "a lawful spouse of the primary heir who carries a direct blood descendant automatically assumes emergency proxy over all disputed family shares in the event of criminal litigation against secondary beneficiaries."

Harrison pointed toward the door, where Detective Kowalski of the State Police stepped into the boardroom.

"Julian Sterling," Detective Kowalski announced, holding up a fresh arrest warrant. "You are under arrest for first-degree premeditated murder in the death of Arthur Sterling, and conspiracy to commit murder against Serena Croft-Sterling. Move slowly."

Julian’s eyes went wild. The arrogant corporate predator vanished, replaced by a desperate, cornered rat.

He suddenly lunged forward, using his cuffed hands to grab a sharp silver letter opener from the conference table. He grabbed Harrison’s lead attorney, pulling her in front of him, pressing the silver point against her throat!

"STAY BACK!" Julian screamed, his voice cracking hysterically. "EVERYONE STAY BACK OR I'LL CUT HER!"

The room dissolved into pure chaos. Board members scrambled out of their chairs, pushing toward the back walls.

Harrison didn't flinch. He didn't even step back. He slowly took one step forward, stepping directly into Julian's line of sight.

"Put the knife down, Julian," Harrison said softly.

"You took everything from me, Harrison!" Julian wept bitterly, his eyes bloodshot. "Father always loved you more! He gave you the company, he gave you the reputation, and then you brought that nobody house-keeper’s daughter into our family to take my trust fund!"

"Serena is ten times the human being you will ever be," Harrison said coldly. "And you are going to die in a cage."

Before Julian could react, Vance—Harrison’s head of security—stepped out from behind the doorframe. With lightning-fast tactical precision, Vance grabbed Julian’s wrist, twisting it inward until the bone snapped with a sickening CRACK.

Julian shrieked in agony, dropping the letter opener as he crashed to the floor. Detective Kowalski instantly pinned him under a heavy boot, ratcheting the handcuffs tight around his wrists.

As the officers dragged the screaming, bleeding man down the hallway, Harrison turned to the remaining board members.

"Meeting adjourned," Harrison said quietly, turning on his heel and walking straight toward the elevator. "I have to get back to my wife."
