Chapter 6 - Awakening in the Dark

The quiet hum of the ICU heart monitor was the first thing Serena heard as she slowly drifted back toward consciousness.
Her eyelids felt heavy, glued together by exhaustion. Her body felt sore, a deep, dull ache radiating across her ribs and lower back. But as her senses gradually returned, she felt a strong, warm weight wrapped around her left hand.
She forced her eyes open.
The room was dimly lit by a small bedside lamp. Standing beside her bed, resting his forehead against her hand, was Harrison. He was still wearing his dark suit, his tie loosened, his dark hair messy.
"Har... rison..." Serena rasped, her throat dry as sand.
Harrison’s head snapped up instantly. His eyes, dark and bloodshot, locked onto hers. For three long seconds, he just stared at her as if he couldn't believe she was real.
"Serena..." he choked out, dropping to his knees beside the bed, pressing his lips against her knuckles. "Thank God... Oh God, Serena..."
"The... the baby..." Serena whispered frantically, her free hand moving down to touch her abdomen. "Harrison... is she...?"
"She's safe, my love," Harrison wept openly, laying his head on the mattress beside her hip, his large hand gently resting over her belly. "She's right here. Her heart is strong. You saved her."
Serena let out a long, shuddering sob of pure relief, her fingers trailing through Harrison’s dark hair. "I held onto... the phone... Harrison... I remembered what you told me... to always keep evidence..."
"I know, baby. I know," Harrison whispered, kissing her fingers repeatedly. "You were incredible. You exposed all of them. Julian and Victoria are in police custody. They will never hurt you again. They will never touch our child."
A soft knock sounded at the door, and Dr. Thorne stepped inside, holding a digital tablet.
"Welcome back, Serena," Dr. Thorne said with a warm, relieved smile. "You gave us quite a scare on Saturday night."
"How is she, Aris?" Harrison asked, standing up and wrapping an arm protectively around Serena’s shoulders.
"Her vitals are remarkable," Dr. Thorne reported. "The internal lacerations have begun to knit together. The baby's growth metrics are right on track. However, because of the physical trauma to her uterine wall, we cannot risk Serena taking another step until delivery."
Serena looked up at the doctor. "What does that mean?"

"It means total bed rest for the remaining ten weeks of your pregnancy," Dr. Thorne explained gently. "No stress, no corporate meetings, no long walks. Absolute peace and quiet."
Harrison looked down at Serena, a soft, resolute smile touching his lips. "She will have complete peace, Aris. I am moving her to the estate in Maine tomorrow morning."
