Chapter 6 - The Viper's Last Strike

Four weeks passed. Nia’s cast was replaced with a removable walking boot, allowing her to move around the mansion with much greater ease. Lucas’s transformation was nothing short of miraculous. He was attending his online classes, completing his coursework under Nia's supervision, and had even taken over managing the estate’s daily logistical expenses as a practical accounting exercise.

For the first time, the Mercer mansion felt like a home.

However, outside the gated estate, storm clouds were gathering.

Darren Cole’s humiliation at the Mercer estate had dire consequences. Deprived of Lucas’s money to pay off his massive debt to the Moretti crime syndicate, Darren was desperate. To save his own skin, Darren offered the Morettis something far more valuable than cash: information.

Darren knew the security codes for the Mercer estate’s side gate, having visited Lucas dozens of times. He also knew about Nia—the housekeeper who had become the center of Adrian Mercer’s world.

On a rainy Thursday evening, Adrian was called away to an urgent emergency meeting across town regarding a strike at his main logistics terminal. Suspicious of the sudden timing, Adrian left double security at the mansion, explicitly instructing them not to let anyone enter.

By midnight, the storm raged outside. Thunder shook the heavy glass windows of the mansion.

Nia was in the library, organizing financial files, when the lights suddenly flickered and died. The estate plunged into pitch blackness.

A second later, the backup generators hummed to life, providing dim emergency lighting along the corridors.

Nia stood up, feeling a sudden chill. She reached for her walking boot, strapping it securely before stepping out into the hallway. "Lucas?" she called out.

No answer.

She moved toward the central foyer. The security guards who usually stood at the inner doors were absent. Puzzled, Nia stepped closer, only to see the front door standing ajar, letting in the freezing rain.

Suddenly, a hand clamped over her mouth from behind, and a heavy arm wrapped around her waist, pinning her arms to her sides!

Nia thrashed, driving her elbow back, striking her captor in the ribs. The man grunted, losing his grip for a second.

"Get off her!"

Lucas appeared from the kitchen hallway, holding a heavy metal flashlight. Without hesitation, the twenty-year-old sprinted forward and swung the flashlight with all his weight, striking the intruder across the shoulder.

The intruder stumbled back. It was one of the muscle men Darren had brought weeks ago. But behind him stood a older, far more dangerous man dressed in a long coat—a high-ranking enforcer for the Moretti syndicate.

"Well, well," the enforcer purred, pulling a silenced pistol from inside his coat. "The mob boss's kid and his favorite maid. Darren said this house would be easy picking tonight once we cut the main power lines."

Lucas stepped in front of Nia, shielding her with his own body. The spoiled, terrified boy from a month ago was completely gone. In his eyes was the iron resolve of his father.

"If you touch her, my father will hunt you to the ends of the earth," Lucas said, his voice steady, deadly quiet.

"Your father is stuck in a traffic trap four miles away," the enforcer sneered. "We aren't here to kill you, kid. We're here to take her. Adrian Mercer will give us whatever territory we want to get his precious housekeeper back."

The enforcer raised his gun, aiming it at Lucas's leg. "Move out of the way, boy, or I'll break your leg to match hers."

"No," Lucas declared, refusing to budge an inch.

Before the enforcer could pull the trigger, the massive oak doors of the mansion were smashed open with tremendous force!

BANG!

The heavy doors slammed inward, knocking the enforcer off balance.

Through the pouring rain, Adrian Mercer stepped into the foyer. He wasn't dressed in his usual refined suit; he wore a rain-soaked tactical jacket, his eyes burning with a terrifying, apocalyptic rage. Behind him stood six heavy-set security officers, weapons drawn.

Adrian hadn't fallen for the terminal trap. The moment power dipped at the mansion, his private security app alerted him, and he turned his motorcade around.

"You crossed into my house," Adrian said, his voice echoing through the dark foyer like thunder. "You threatened my son. You laid hands on Nia."

The Moretti enforcer panicked, trying to turn his weapon toward Adrian.

In a split second, Adrian’s lead security officer fired two non-lethal rubber shock rounds, striking the enforcer squarely in the chest. The man collapsed to the marble floor, gasping for air, dropping his weapon.

The second intruder tried to run, but was tackled to the floor by two guards within seconds.

Adrian didn't look at the fallen men. He sprinted across the floor, bypassing his guards, and pulled Lucas into a fierce, tight embrace.

"Are you hurt?" Adrian asked, his voice shaking with rare panic. "Did they touch you?"

"I'm fine, Dad," Lucas breathed, hugging his father back firmly. "I kept her safe."

Adrian released his son, looking at him with immense pride, before turning his gaze to Nia.

She was standing near the wall, her breathing ragged, staring at Adrian. Without a word, Adrian walked over, framed her face with his warm, rain-soaked hands, and pulled her against his chest, holding her as if the world were ending.

"I'm sorry," Adrian whispered into her hair, his body trembling. "I'm so sorry I let them near you."

May you like

Nia wrapped her arms around his waist, burying her face into his coat. "You came back," she whispered. "You saved us."

"I will always come back for you," Adrian declared fiercely, looking down into her eyes. "Always."
