Chapter 9 - The Trials of Society

News of the upcoming wedding between Chicago’s most powerful mogul, Adrian Mercer, and his former housekeeper sent shockwaves through high society.

The elite social circles of Chicago were brutal. Rumors spread like wildfire. Gossip columns snidely referred to Nia as a "cashing-in maid" and accused her of taking advantage of a wealthy widower.

A month before the wedding, a high-profile charity gala was held at the Grand Ballroom in downtown Chicago. It was the biggest social event of the year, attended by senators, billionaires, and the city's old-money elite.

Adrian wanted to skip it, knowing how hostile the crowd might be, but Nia insisted on attending.

"We are not hiding, Adrian," Nia said firmly, adjusting her stunning emerald-green evening gown in the mirror. "I have nothing to be ashamed of. I worked for every single thing I have, and I love you. Let them talk."

When Adrian, Nia, and Lucas arrived at the gala, the room went quiet. Whispers broke out among the crowd.

Victoria Sterling, a wealthy socialite who had tried for years to court Adrian after his wife’s passing, stepped forward with a group of wealthy patrons.

"Adrian, darling," Victoria purred, glancing condescendingly at Nia. "How brave of you to bring your... new staff member to such an exclusive event."

The group snickered softly.

Adrian’s eyes flashed with anger, but before he could speak, Lucas stepped forward, standing tall beside Nia.

"She’s not a staff member, Mrs. Sterling," Lucas said, his voice ringing clearly across the quieted circle. "She is my father's fiancee, the Chief Financial Officer of Mercer Enterprises, and the woman who saved my life. Show some respect."

Victoria flushed with embarrassment at being publicly corrected by Adrian's son.

Nia stepped forward, offering a graceful, calm smile. "Mrs. Sterling, I understand you were concerned about Mercer Enterprises' recent corporate restructuring. You'll be pleased to know that our Q3 audit showed a thirty percent increase in net profits after we eliminated redundant overhead. Perhaps your husband's firm could use some of our consulting services?"

The surrounding business leaders gasped in quiet admiration. Nia hadn't retaliated with insults; she had demonstrated superior intelligence, poise, and absolute mastery of her domain.

A wealthy investor, Arthur Vance, stepped forward, holding out his glass to Nia. "Mrs. Bennett... or rather, soon to be Mrs. Mercer. I reviewed your recent financial restructuring report published in the Business Journal. Brilliant work. Absolutely brilliant."

"Thank you, Mr. Vance," Nia replied with effortless elegance.

Within twenty minutes, the snide whispers vanished. Nia was surrounded by top executives seeking her financial insights, while Adrian watched her from across the room, his heart bursting with pride.

Lucas walked up beside his father, clinking his punch glass against Adrian's champagne flute.

"She blew them away, didn't she?" Lucas smirked.

"She always does, son," Adrian smiled, taking a sip. "She always does."
