Chapter 8 - A New Foundation

Three months later.

The transition of the Mercer household was complete. Nia did not return to her modest apartment; instead, she officially moved into the primary residential suite of the mansion.

With her accounting degree now completed with top honors, Adrian offered her a position as the Chief Financial Analyst for his legitimate corporate entities—a role she accepted not out of favor, but because she was undeniably qualified. Within weeks, Nia discovered multiple accounting inefficiencies across Adrian’s trucking and restaurant holdings, saving the family business millions of dollars through ethical restructuring.

More importantly, she convinced Adrian to permanently sever all ties with the gray-market underworld operations he had maintained for defense.

"You don't need fear to protect your family anymore, Adrian," Nia told him during a board meeting at his downtown headquarters. "Legitimate strength is unbreakable."

Adrian listened. Step by step, under Nia's guidance, Mercer Enterprises transitioned entirely into a transparent, highly successful logistics conglomerate.

Meanwhile, Lucas was thriving. He enrolled full-time in the university's Honors Business Program, specializing in supply chain management. The arrogant bully who used to ruin housekeepers' lives had turned into a humble, hardworking young man who spent his weekends volunteering at local youth centers on the South Side—a initiative suggested by Nia to keep him grounded.

One Saturday afternoon, Lucas walked into the kitchen, where Thomas was preparing afternoon tea.

Lucas picked up an apron, tying it around his waist.

Thomas looked at him in surprise. "Mr. Lucas? What are you doing?"

"Helping you, Thomas," Lucas smiled, picking up a tray of fresh scones. "You've been taking care of this house for fourteen years. It's time someone helped you."

Thomas stared at the boy he had watched grow up, his eyes misting with emotional pride. "Your mother would be so proud of you, Lucas. So very proud."

Lucas paused, looking out the kitchen window toward the garden where Adrian and Nia were walking hand-in-hand, laughing softly in the crisp afternoon air.

"She would love Nia," Lucas said quietly. "Nia saved us, Thomas."

"Indeed she did, son," Thomas agreed softly. "Indeed she did."

That evening, Adrian took Nia to a private dinner at a restaurant overlooking the Chicago skyline. As the city lights sparkled below them, Adrian reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a velvet box.

Nia’s heart thudded in her chest as he set it on the table between them.

"Nia," Adrian began, taking her hand. "Four months ago, I was a father who had failed his son, living in a house full of bitterness. You slipped on a floor, broke your leg, and somehow managed to put our broken lives back together."

He opened the box, revealing a stunning, ethically sourced emerald-cut diamond ring that caught the candlelight.

"You are the anchor of my life, the light in my darkness, and the woman I want to spend the rest of my days loving," Adrian said, his voice filled with profound warmth. "Nia Bennett, will you marry me and make this family complete?"

Nia looked from the brilliant ring up to Adrian’s eyes, seeing the deep, unconditional love reflecting back at her.

May you like

"Yes," Nia wept softly, a brilliant smile breaking across her face. "Yes, Adrian! A thousand times yes!"

He slipped the ring onto her finger and pulled her into a passionate kiss, while the restaurant staff—and Lucas, who had secretly snuck in with Thomas to watch from the entrance—erupted into joyful applause.
