Chapter 1 - BENEATH THE ADHESIVE

The heavy oak doors of St. Matthew’s Chapel swung shut, cutting off the chill of the midnight rain, but the lingering tension inside the sanctuary remained as thick as incense.
Father Michael Bennett stood near the baptismal font, his breathing slow and measured. The quiet of the church, usually a sanctuary of peace, felt fragile—like thin ice over a rushing river. Across the room, Detective Rachel Torres remained standing near the vestibule, her radio crackling softly as patrol units escorted Vanessa Cole, Daniel Price, and their hired security off the parish grounds.
In the second pew, Hannah Reed sat wrapped in a heavy wool coat, her fingers trembling around a paper cup of warm tea. Her mother, Laura, sat three pews back, isolated in her guilt, weeping silently into her hands.
Father Michael looked down at the table near the altar where the court document lay. The damp air had done what Vanessa’s polished lies could not: the adhesive on the small white label near the bottom of the final page had weakened, curling upward at the corner.
Detective Torres walked back toward the altar, her boots echoing against the stone floor. She stopped beside Michael, her gaze tracking his eyes to the document.
"You saw something back there," Torres said, her voice low and even. "Before she snatched it back."
"I used to read contracts for a living, Rachel," Michael said softly, keeping his voice down so as not to startle Hannah. "Court orders have standard boilerplate formatting. A judge's signature is always preceded by specific statutory language regarding the scope of authority. That sticker wasn't covering an administrative error. It was covering a limitation."
Torres pulled a pair of nitrile gloves from her pocket and snapped them on. With precise, practiced fingers, she carefully peeled back the white label.
Beneath the paper, dark black text emerged:
...PROVIDED THAT THIS TEMPORARY GUARDIANSHIP SHALL EXCLUSIVELY GRANT FINANCIAL OVERSIGHT. MEDICAL DECISION-MAKING POWERS ARE EXPRESSLY DENIED PENDING FULL PSYCHIATRIC EVALUATION BY AN INDEPENDENT COURT-APPOINTED PHYSICIAN.
Torres let out a sharp breath. "She altered an official court document. That’s a felony."
"It's worse than that," Michael said, his jaw tightening. "It means every medical action taken against Hannah’s will—the forced sedation, the confinement at the private clinic, the attempt to terminate her pregnancy—was not just unethical. It was illegal. It was kidnapping and aggravated assault under the color of authority."
Hannah’s head jerked up at the word assault. She set the cup down, her knuckles white. "She knew," Hannah whispered, her voice hoarse. "Vanessa knew the judge didn't give her control over my body. That’s why she brought her own doctor. That’s why she didn't take me to a public hospital."
Michael walked over to Hannah and knelt beside her pew, bringing himself to her eye level. "Hannah, Detective Torres is going to take you to St. Jude’s Medical Center. It’s a municipal facility, entirely outside your aunt’s sphere of influence. They have a specialized wing for high-risk obstetric care and protective custody."
Hannah looked toward the back of the church, where her mother sat huddled in the dark. "What about her?"
Laura Reed lifted her tear-streaked face. "Hannah... please. I didn't know about the paper. Vanessa told me it was the only way to save you. She said you were sick, that the baby would ruin your life, that you weren't in your right mind..."
"You held my arms, Mom," Hannah said, her voice dangerously calm, stripped of all tears. "When the nurse brought the sedative, I begged you. I looked you in the eye and begged you to let me go. And you held my wrists down until everything went black."
Laura flinched as if struck, burying her face back in her hands, her shoulders shaking violently.
Torres stepped forward, her expression somber. "Mrs. Reed, I need you to step outside with Officer Carter. You are a key witness to an ongoing investigation, and depending on what the medical reports state, you may be facing charges of conspiracy and unlawful restraint."
As Carter led Laura out into the rain, Hannah closed her eyes, a single tear cutting through the dried mud on her cheek.
May you like
"I'm all alone now," Hannah whispered.
"No, you aren't," Michael said firmly. "You have the law on your side now, Hannah. And as long as you need a place to stand, this church—and I—will stand with you."
