Chapter 3 - THE WEAPONIZED DIAGNOSIS

An hour later, at the precinct headquarters, Detective Torres sat across from Father Michael in a small conference room. The scorched binder lay open between them, flanked by printed copies of the photos Michael had taken in the basement.

Sister Martha arrived shortly after, accompanied by Arthur Vance, a retired senior partner from a prominent probate firm who volunteered his time for parish legal aid.

Arthur adjusted his reading glasses, his withered fingers turning the pages of the ledger with practiced care.

"This is extraordinary," Arthur whispered, shaking his head in disbelief. "Charles Reed didn't just leave Hannah a house. He was the majority shareholder in Reed Logistics—a regional freight company valued at over eighteen million dollars."

Michael leaned forward. "And Sterling managed the trust?"

"Precisely," Arthur explained. "According to these books, Charles created a testamentary trust that designated Hannah as the sole beneficiary upon reaching her twenty-fifth birthday—or immediately upon the birth of her first child. Whichever came first."

Torres gasped softly. "The pregnancy trigger clause."

"Exactly," Arthur confirmed. "If Hannah carried a child to term, full legal title to the entire eighteen-million-dollar estate transferred automatically to her, terminating Sterling's corporate control and his trustee fees. But if Hannah was declared permanently incapacitated by a court before giving birth, guardianship rules allowed the trustee—Richard Sterling and Vanessa Cole—to retain total control of the assets indefinitely."

"That's why they poisoned her water," Michael said, the pieces falling into place with sickening clarity. "They didn't want to kill her outright. They used low-dose trichloride compounds to induce chronic neurological symptoms—confusion, memory loss, paranoia—to manufacture a fake psychiatric history. Then, when she got pregnant, they panicked."

"Because a baby meant game over for Sterling's embezzlement," Torres said, slamming her pen on the table. "They needed that baby gone, and they needed Hannah locked in a psych ward forever."

"Where is Hannah now?" Michael asked, standing up. "Is she safe at St. Jude's?"

"She was," Torres said, her phone suddenly ringing. She looked at the caller ID, and her face went pale. "It's the hospital guard."

She snatched up the phone, putting it on speaker. "Deputy Miller, report."

"Detective, we've got a situation," Miller's voice came through, chaotic and breathless over the line. "A team of state medical transport officers just arrived with an emergency psychiatric hold order issued by Judge Calloway from the third district circuit court. They have an armed escort!"

"On what grounds?" Torres demanded, her voice rising.

"They presented an affidavit signed by Dr. Daniel Price alleging that Hannah is actively suicidal and presents an immediate threat to her unborn fetus!" Miller reported. "They brought a state-appointed psychiatrist who verified the paper. They're wheeling her out to an ambulance right now!"

Michael's chest constricted. "Calloway is a probate judge. Sterling represented Calloway's campaign committee three years ago!"

"Torres!" Michael shouted. "We have to stop that ambulance!"

"I'm on it," Torres snapped into her radio. "All units, respond to St. Jude’s Medical Center, emergency code three! Intercept transport vehicle Delta-4!"
