Chapter 5 - THE SANCTUARY OF TRUTH

Alarm horns blared in rhythmic pulses throughout the building. Red emergency lights bathed the sterile white hallways in a sinister crimson glow.

Michael sprinted up the central stairwell, taking three steps at a time, his priest’s collar unbuttoned, his lungs burning. Behind him, he heard the heavy boots of Detective Torres clearing the lower level, holding off the facility's private security guards at gunpoint.

Michael reached the third-floor landing and kicked open the heavy fire door.

At the end of the long hallway, two nurses were wheeling a heavy steel gurney toward a double door marked Surgical Suite B. Strap restraints were tied securely across Hannah’s legs and torso. She was thrashing violently, her face pale, her lips moving as she tried to scream through the thick cloth gag they had tied over her mouth.

Standing by the surgical doors was Dr. Daniel Price, wearing green surgical scrubs, holding a pre-filled syringe against the light. Beside him stood Vanessa Cole, her beige coat stained with rain, her face twisted in desperate rage.

"Inject her now!" Vanessa ordered Price, her voice sharp and hysterical. "Before the police get up here! Once the procedure is done, it doesn't matter what paperwork they have!"

"Stop!" Michael’s voice shattered the corridor.

Price turned, his eyes wide with shock, his hand trembling around the syringe. "Father Bennett? How did you get in here? Security—"

"Security is on the floor downstairs!" Michael roared, advancing down the hallway with terrifying purpose. "Put that needle down, Price! You are five seconds away from a federal kidnapping and treason charge!"

"You have no authority here, Priest!" Vanessa spat, stepping in front of the gurney, pulling a small silver pistol from her designer handbag. "This is my ward! This is my family's business! You ruined everything!"

Michael stopped ten feet away. He did not look at the gun. He looked directly into Vanessa's wild, unravelling eyes.

"It was never about Hannah's health, was it, Vanessa?" Michael said, his voice dropping to a low, commanding tone that seemed to fill the hallway. "It was about eighteen million dollars in Reed Logistics stock. It was about the chemical injection system you installed in her well water to destroy her mind. It was about the forgery."

"Shut up!" Vanessa screamed, her hand shaking violently as she aimed the pistol at Michael's chest. "She's sick! She's crazy! Just like her father!"

"Her father knew what you were," Michael said softly, taking one slow step forward. "Charles Reed left that inheritance to Hannah because he knew you and Richard were parasites. And he put the pregnancy clause in his trust because he wanted Hannah to have a family of her own—a family you tried to murder tonight."

"I will shoot you!" Vanessa cried out, tears of unhinged panic leaking down her cheeks. "I swear to God, I will shoot you!"

"Then shoot," Michael said quietly, taking another step. "But know this, Vanessa: Detective Torres has already uploaded your signed chemical receipts to the District Attorney. The state police are five minutes away. It is over."

From the gurney, Hannah made a muffled, desperate sound, her eyes locked on Michael.

Price’s face went completely white. He dropped the syringe to the floor; it shattered against the tile. "Vanessa... put the gun down. They have the receipts. It's finished."

"Coward!" Vanessa screamed, turning the gun toward Price.

BANG!

A gunshot echoed through the narrow hallway.

Vanessa gasped, dropping the gun as a taser dart struck her squarely in the shoulder. High-voltage electricity surged through her body, throwing her against the wall before she collapsed to the floor, twitching uncontrollably.

Detective Torres stepped through the stairwell door, her taser held firm in both hands, wires extending to Vanessa's crumpled form.

"Drop to your knees! Hands behind your head!" Torres shouted at Price.

Price instantly fell to his knees, weeping hysterically, locking his hands behind his neck.

Michael rushed past them straight to the gurney. He pulled the gag from Hannah’s mouth and quickly unbuckled the leather straps binding her wrists and legs.

Hannah sat up instantly, throwing her arms around Michael’s neck, sobbing hysterically into his shoulder. "They were going to do it... they were putting me under..."

"Shh... it's over, Hannah," Michael whispered, wrapping his coat around her shivering shoulders. "You're safe. Your baby is safe. It's completely over."
