Chapter 6 - THE CONFESSION OF LAURA REED

By sunrise, the Starlight Wellness Center was crawling with State Police cruisers, FBI field agents, and forensics teams. Vanessa Cole and Dr. Daniel Price were led away in handcuffs, charged with felony kidnapping, attempted non-consensual medical termination, poisoning, and falsification of court records.
Richard Sterling was arrested two hours later at his corporate office in downtown Chicago as he attempted to transfer four million dollars from the Reed Trust into an offshore account in the Cayman Islands.
Hannah was moved to a private security suite at University Hospital, protected round-the-clock by state troopers.
Father Michael sat in the quiet waiting room on the fifth floor, sipping black coffee from a styrofoam cup. He hadn't slept in thirty-six hours, but his mind was sharp and clear.
The door opened, and Detective Torres walked in, carrying two thick blue legal folders. She sat down beside him, letting out a long, exhausted sigh.
"Sterling's associate cracked," Torres said, taking a sip of her own coffee. "The young lawyer gave up everything to save his own skin. He gave state prosecutors the entire blueprint of how Sterling and Vanessa systematically poisoned Hannah over six months using trichloride compounds in her water supply."
"What about Laura?" Michael asked softly. "Hannah's mother?"
Torres looked down at her folder. "Laura Reed is down in Interrogation Room B. She's been asking to speak with you, Michael. Only you. She refuses to sign her formal statement until she talks to a priest."
Michael stood up, pulling his collar back into place. "Let's go."
Down in the basement interrogation room of the precinct, Laura Reed looked ten years older than she had thirty-six hours ago. Her eyes were red and sunken, her hair unkempt, her hands trembling as she held a paper cup of water.
When Michael entered, she looked up, a sob bursting from her throat.
"Father..." Laura wept, hiding her face. "I'm going to hell. God will never forgive me."
Michael pulled out a chair across from her and sat down. "God’s mercy is endless, Laura, but truth requires accountability. Why did you help them?"
Laura's shoulders shook as she wiped her face with a tissue. "Vanessa... she had complete control over me. After Charles died, I had nothing. Vanessa showed me medical reports—fake ones, I know that now—saying Hannah had early-onset schizophrenia. She told me that if Hannah had a baby in her condition, the state would take the baby away and throw Hannah into a state institution forever."
"And you believed her?" Michael asked.
"Vanessa said... she said the only way to save Hannah's life was to end the pregnancy, clear her mind with proper treatment, and get her into a specialized private home," Laura whispered, her voice cracking. "She told me the pills were just mood stabilizers. I didn't know about the poison, Father! I swear on my life, I didn't know they were poisoning her water!"
"But you held her arms down, Laura," Michael said, his voice steady, filled with a heavy sadness. "When she begged you for help in that clinic, you held her down."
"Because I was terrified!" Laura wailed. "Vanessa told me that if Hannah escaped that night, she would jump off a bridge! She manipulated my fear, Father! She used my own daughter against me!"
Michael reached across the table and placed his hand gently over Laura's trembling fingers. "Laura, you must tell the district attorney everything. Every detail, every conversation, every threat Vanessa ever made. That is the only way you can begin to repair the unfathomable damage you have caused your daughter."

Laura looked up, her eyes wide with desperation. "Will Hannah ever forgive me?"
Michael looked at her with quiet truth. "Forgiveness is a long journey, Laura. But today, your daughter and her child are alive. Start by giving them justice."
