Chapter 2 - The Mask Shatters

The silence in the Solmere lobby was absolute. You could hear the faint drip of water from the ice sculptures near the raw bar.
Victoria’s face went through a terrifying transformation—from smug superiority to confusion, and finally to a pale, sickly green. "What... what did you just call her?"
"This is Charlotte Vale," Arthur said, turning around to face the crowded room, his voice booming with legal authority. "Sole surviving heir to the late Victoria-Rose Vale, founder and principal owner of the Solmere Hotel Group, holding seventy percent of all voting shares and absolute ownership of the land upon which this building sits."
Gasps rippled through the socialites. Champagne flutes wobbled in manicured hands.
"That's impossible!" a loud, booming voice roared from the grand staircase.
Harrison Sterling, the broad-shouldered, ruthless Managing Director, descended the stairs rapidly, flanked by his private accountants. "Charlotte Vale died in a boating accident off the coast of Capri six months ago! Her death certificate was signed by the international coroner!"
Charlotte turned to face Harrison, taking the silk handkerchief and dabbing the small cut on her lip. A cold, knowing smile spread across her face.
"A death certificate you paid two million dollars to forge in Naples, Harrison," Charlotte said, her tone smooth as silk. "Did you really think throwing me off my mother’s yacht in the middle of a storm would be enough? You forgot one very important detail."
Harrison stopped at the bottom of the stairs, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the polished brass banister. "What detail?"
"My mother taught me how to swim in open ocean currents before I could walk," Charlotte said, taking three slow, deliberate steps toward him. "I spent four days on a fishing boat in the Mediterranean, three months in hiding uncovering your paper trail, and three weeks acting as a low-level cleaning temp in this very hotel to watch you squander my family's legacy."
Victoria stumbled backward, pointing a shaking finger at Charlotte. "You... you were the temp cleaning the executive washrooms?!"
"I was," Charlotte replied, her eyes flashing like steel. "And while I was cleaning up your mess, Victoria, I retrieved the encrypted flash drive your father kept hidden inside his desk’s false floor—the drive detailing the offshore accounts used to slowly poison my mother over two years."
Harrison’s face drained of every drop of blood. He reached into his coat for his cell phone, but Chief Federal Marshal Vance stepped in front of him, producing a red-sealed arrest warrant.
"Harrison Sterling," Vance announced sternly. "You are under arrest for conspiracy to commit murder, corporate embezzlement of $400 million, and forged documentation."

"No! This is a setup! Victoria, call our lawyers!" Harrison shouted as steel handcuffs clicked tightly around his wrists.
"Victoria won't be calling anyone," Charlotte said, turning her icy gaze back to the terrified socialite in the silk gown. "Because Victoria is about to be arrested for physical assault, corporate trespassing, and felony battery."
