Chapter 5 - The Economic Siege

At 4:00 AM, the command center inside the Solmere Hotel was in a state of controlled panic.

Monitors displayed red financial graphs cascading downward. The Solmere Group’s stock on the London and Frankfurt exchanges was plummeting—down forty percent in three hours.

"It's a coordinated short-attack, Miss Vale!" the chief financial officer shouted over the sound of ringing phones. "Someone is dumping millions of synthetic shares onto the market, spreading rumors that the company is insolvent due to Harrison Sterling’s embezzlement!"

Charlotte stood behind the central console, holding a cup of black coffee. She looked remarkably composed, despite having slept less than two hours over the last three days.

"Who is buying the shorted stock?" Charlotte asked sharply.

"A private hedge fund registered in the Cayman Islands called Aegis Capital," the analyst replied. "They've already acquired twelve percent of our public float in the last forty minutes."

"Julian Croft," Arthur Pendelton muttered, stepping up beside Charlotte. "Aegis Capital is his primary laundering vehicle. If he reaches twenty percent ownership, he can force an emergency shareholder vote to liquidate the land assets."

"He wants the land," Charlotte realized, her eyes narrowing as she looked at the city map displayed on the central screen. "The hotel sits directly over the proposed underground rail corridor for the new international trade hub. The land alone is worth three billion dollars if the hotel is demolished."

"We need fifty million dollars in cash immediately to buy back our own stock and stabilize the price," Arthur said grimly. "But with our primary accounts frozen due to the federal audit on Harrison, no bank in the city will lend us that money."

Charlotte smiled—a sharp, dangerous smile that made Arthur blink in surprise.

"We don't need a bank, Arthur," Charlotte said, turning around and walking toward the executive safe in the wall behind her. "My mother knew Julian Croft was snake twenty years ago. She built a defense mechanism he never anticipated."

Charlotte pressed her palm against the bio-metric scanner on the safe. The heavy steel door clicked open with a deep hiss of hydraulic pressure.

Inside lay a single, velvet-lined box containing a black titanium key card and an ancient, leather-bound ledger.

"What is that?" Arthur whispered.

"The original founding charter of the Solmere Land Trust," Charlotte said, lifting the heavy ledger. "My mother didn't just own the hotel, Arthur. She owned the water rights to the entire financial district. And Julian Croft’s tower sits on land that leases those water rights from us... on a thirty-day revocable contract."
