Chapter 6 - The Trap Sprung

By 9:00 AM, the sun was shining brightly over the city, casting long shadows across the glass towers of the financial district.
Inside the grand ballroom of the Croft Financial Center, a press conference was under way. Dozens of journalists, news cameras, and financial analysts packed the room.
Julian Croft stood at the podum, looking immaculate, flanked by his legal team and public relations directors.
"Due to the tragic criminal activities of Harrison Sterling," Julian announced into the microphones, his tone filled with hypocritical sorrow, "the Solmere Group is facing unprecedented financial collapse. As the chief creditor and founder of Aegis Capital, I have stepped in to offer a bailout package to protect the city's interests..."
The heavy double doors at the back of the ballroom slammed open.
"The Solmere Group does not require your bailout, Mr. Croft," a commanding voice rang out over the reporters' heads.
The crowd gasped and turned their cameras toward the back of the room.
Charlotte Vale walked down the center aisle, flanked by Arthur Pendelton, four federal prosecutors, and the Chief City Water Commissioner. She wore an exquisite sapphire-blue dress suit, walking with absolute grace and undeniable authority.
Julian’s eyes narrowed, but he maintained his smooth public smile. "Ah, Charlotte. I am glad to see you alive, my dear. But this is a private financial briefing. You are disrupting—"
"I am exercising my rights under Section 4 of the City Infrastructure Act," Charlotte interrupted, stepping onto the stage and standing right beside his podium. She handed a red-bound legal notice to the City Commissioner, who immediately stamped it with an official seal.
"What is this nonsense?" Julian hissed under his breath, leaning away from the microphones.
"This is an emergency order revoking Croft Tower's utility and structural access permits," Charlotte announced into the secondary microphone. "As of eight o'clock this morning, the Solmere Land Trust has canceled your water and sub-surface land leases due to non-payment of historical land taxes totaling $180 million."
The reporters went wild. Camera flashes erupted like lightning bolts across the stage.
"That lease was locked for ninety-nine years!" Julian snarled, his public smile completely vanishing.
"It was locked," Charlotte corrected softly, leaning in so only he could hear, "until you used Aegis Capital to buy Solmere short stock. Clause 12 of your lease states that any hostile financial action against the Trust immediately defaults the lease and forfeits all collateral."

Julian’s face turned gray. "You... you trapped me into buying that stock."
"I let you think you were hunting a wounded deer, Julian," Charlotte whispered, her eyes flashing with triumphant ice. "When in reality, you walked right into the slaughterhouse."
