Chapter 5 - SHADOWS OF THE CONCLAVE

While the public defeat of the Crane family satisfied my personal closure, a much darker storm was gathering within the walls of the Bellandi empire.

One week before the Triennial Conclave, where Dante’s leadership would be formally ratified by the syndicate’s regional bosses, a quiet poison began to move through the mansion.

It started with small things.

A tray of milk served to little Livia in the nursery was found to contain traces of sedatives. I caught it only because I noticed the milk had a faint, bitter odor before handing the cup to her.

Then, the estate's internal security cameras in the nursery wing experienced mysterious twenty-minute blind spots every night at midnight.

I sat in Dante’s private study late one evening while the children slept upstairs. Dante was reviewing maps of the family's shipping docks, his face dark with tension.

"Someone inside this house is working for my rivals, the Moretti family," Dante said, setting down a heavy brass pen. "The Morettis know that if I secure my marriage to you and unite the syndicate council, their leverage in the city is gone forever."

"It's Signora Lucrezia, isn't it?" I asked directly, sitting across from him.

Dante’s eyes narrowed slightly. "My aunt is ambitious, but she is family."

"She hates that I am here, Dante," I pointed out gently. "She wants her own grand-niece from the Sicilian faction to take the position of matriarch so she can retain control over the family's estate trusts. The sedatives in Livia’s milk... it wasn't meant to kill her. It was meant to make me look negligent as a governess so you would fire me before the Conclave."

Dante stood up slowly, stepping toward me. The coldness in his eyes turned into a fierce, protective flame.

"No one touches my children, and no one removes you from this house," Dante said, his voice deep and absolute. "If my aunt is playing games with the Morettis, she has forgotten why I carry the title of Don."

He reached out, his hand gently taking mine. Over the past three weeks, the distance between us had slowly eroded. What had started as a cold contract was turning into something deep, powerful, and undeniably real.

"Evelyn," Dante murmured, leaning down until his forehead rested against mine. "When I brought you through those gates, I thought I was hiring a shield for my children. I didn't expect you to become the heart of this home."

My breath hitched as his hand slid to the back of my neck, his thumb caressing my skin.

"Dante..." I whispered, looking into his gray eyes, seeing no longer a mob boss, but a man who bore the heavy weight of a empire to protect the people he loved.

"The Conclave is in four days," Dante whispered against my lips. "Once the council ratifies our union, you will be untouchable. But until then, I need you to trust me completely."

"I trust you, Dante," I said, meeting his gaze without fear. "More than I have ever trusted anyone."

Before he could answer, the mansion's emergency alarm shattered the quiet night.

Red warning lights flashed across the study walls, and Enzo burst through the double doors, his face drained of color, holding a blood-stained radio.

"Don Bellandi!" Enzo shouted. "The perimeter fence on the east wing has been breached! The Moretti hit squad is inside the grounds—and they are heading straight for the nursery!"
