Chapter 6 - THE SIEGE OF THE NURSERY

Dante acted with the terrifying speed of a seasoned warlord.
In a fraction of a second, he pulled a custom silver-plated semi-automatic pistol from a hidden compartment beneath his desk, flicking off the safety with a sharp, practiced click.
"Enzo! Secure the lower courtyard with the primary guard unit!" Dante commanded, his voice booming over the blaring alarm sirens. "Do not let a single intruder cross the chapel line!"
"Understood, Don!" Enzo yelled, turning to sprint down the corridor.
Dante turned to me, his hands grasping my shoulders with iron strength. "Evelyn! Go to the nursery wing immediately! Lock the panic room doors from the inside! Do not open them for anyone except me or Enzo!"
"What about you?!" I cried out over the deafening sirens.
"I am going to end this," Dante said, his eyes flashing with lethal intent. He pulled me close, pressing a fierce, fiery kiss to my lips—a kiss filled with raw promise and desperate passion. "Go! Protect our children!"
I didn't hesitate. I turned and ran up the grand staircase, my heart pounding in my throat as gunfire echoed from the lower gardens below. Glass shattered downstairs, followed by the heavy thuds of tactical boots echoing through the marble hallways.
I reached the third-floor nursery wing.
Inside, the three children were huddled together under the central glass dome. Leo was holding a wooden toy sword, trying to look brave while standing in front of Matteo and Livia, who were weeping into Miss Pearl.
"Evelyn!" Leo cried out, his young face pale with terror as I burst through the doors.
"I'm here! I'm here!" I gasped, dropping to my knees and gathering all three children into my arms. "Listen to me! We are going to the safe room right now!"
Before we could reach the reinforced steel panic room at the back of the nursery, the heavy double oak doors of the nursery wing were kicked open with a thunderous CRACK.
Two armed men in black tactical gear and ski masks stepped into the room, their assault rifles raised.
Behind them walked Signora Donna Lucrezia.
She was holding a silver revolver, her face twisted into a grotesque, triumphant sneer.
"Going somewhere, Miss Ward?" Lucrezia scoffed, her voice cold and dripping with venom.
I stepped in front of the three children, shielding them entirely with my body, my hands spread wide. "Lucrezia... you brought Moretti hitmen into your own family's home?!"
"This home ceased to be mine the moment Dante decided to elevate a common servant like you over my bloodline!" Lucrezia hissed, her gun pointing directly at my chest. "The Morettis agreed to support my nephew Marco as the new Don once Dante is eliminated tonight. And as for these little weaklings..." She looked at the crying children with utter disgust. "...they will be sent to a boarding school in Europe where they can no longer ruin my plans."
Leo stepped out from behind my waist, his little voice trembling but fierce. "Aunt Lucrezia! You are a traitor to the Bellandi house!"
"Quiet, boy!" Lucrezia barked, pulling back the hammer of her revolver. "Say your prayers, Evelyn Ward. You should have stayed in the rain where Sebastian Crane left you."
"She isn't in the rain anymore, Auntie," a cold, dark voice echoed from the doorway behind her.
Lucrezia froze.
Dante stood in the destroyed entryway, covered in dust and blood—none of it his own. His pistol was raised, his eyes burning with the terrifying light of an executioner.
Before Lucrezia’s hitmen could turn their rifles, two sharp gunshots echoed through the high-ceilinged room.
The two Moretti mercenaries collapsed to the floor instantly.
Lucrezia spun around, panicking, raising her silver revolver toward Dante.
THUD.
A shot rang out. Lucrezia gasped, dropping her gun as a bullet struck her right shoulder. She collapsed onto the velvet rug, clutching her bleeding arm, crying out in pathetic terror.
Dante stepped into the room, his heavy boots crunching over the glass shards. He didn't even look at his bleeding aunt. He walked straight past her, dropping his gun into his holster, and pulled me and the three children into his massive, strong arms.
"Are you hurt?" Dante asked, his voice shaking with a rare, profound emotion as he checked my face, my hands, my shoulders. "Evelyn... are you hurt?"
May you like
"We're safe, Dante," I whispered, resting my head against his chest, listening to the rapid, fierce beat of his heart. "We're all safe."
Leo, Matteo, and Livia wrapped their arms around both of us, clinging to us as a complete, unbreakable family.
