Chapter 3 - The Bloodline War

By 4:00 a.m., Leslie’s fever had finally broken. She was sleeping peacefully on the small hospital cot, her breathing slow and deep, her cheeks returning to their natural pale pink color.

Conrad had transferred us to a private VIP room on the pediatric floor, personally standing guard outside the door to ensure his mother's security detail couldn't enter.

I sat in an armchair beside the bed, staring at the sunrise breaking over the Miami skyline. Conrad walked in carrying two fresh bottles of water and a warm blanket. He gently draped the blanket over my shoulders and sat on the footstool beside my chair.

"The blood work came back," Conrad said quietly. "It was just a severe viral throat infection that triggered a spike fever. Her white blood cell count is already stabilizing. She can go home tomorrow afternoon."

"Thank God," I breathed, resting my head against the high back of the chair.

Conrad looked down at his hands. "Erin... we need to talk about what happens when we leave this building."

"There is no 'we', Conrad," I said softly, looking at him with heavy eyes. "You have a life here. You're the Chief of Pediatric Emergency. You're engaged to a surgeon's daughter. You have a multi-million-dollar family name. I live in a two-bedroom apartment in Little Havana and wash bedsheets at a hotel."

"Do you think I care about any of that?!" Conrad demanded, grabbing my hands with fierce desperation. "Erin, my mother stole five years of my life with you! She stole my daughter's first steps! She stole her first words! She made me live in a hollow shell, pretending to be a dutiful son while my soul was buried in a fake grave!"

"She has power, Conrad!" I argued, pulling my hands back. "You heard her! She will strip your license! She will hire the best custody lawyers in the country and try to take Leslie away from me, claiming I'm financially unfit!"

Conrad's eyes darkened into cold, hardened steel. "She can try. But she forgets one thing."

"What?"

"I am a Finnegan too," Conrad said quietly. "And my father left thirty percent of the hospital’s holding shares directly to my future children in his private trust before he passed away. Deborah doesn't own this hospital, Erin. My daughter does."

I stared at him, stunned. "What?"

"When my father died ten years ago, he knew how ruthless my mother could be," Conrad explained, leaning closer. "He created an irrevocable family trust. It states that thirty percent of the Finnegan Health Network's voting stock automatically vests in my firstborn biological child upon their birth."

A cold realization washed over me. "That's why she tried so hard to keep us apart... that's why she wanted me to abort Leslie!"

"Precisely," Conrad said, a dark, dangerous smile touching his lips. "If Leslie exists—if her paternity is legally documented—Deborah loses total control over the board of directors. Leslie's existence destroys my mother's empire."

Before I could digest the staggering truth, the room door clicked open.

A young man wearing an unbuttoned suit jacket, messily combed hair, and wire-rimmed glasses slipped into the room, holding a leather briefcase under his arm.

"Conrad!" the man whispered urgently, shutting the door behind him. "I came as fast as I could. I got your text at three in the morning."

"Erin," Conrad said, standing up. "This is Julian Ross. He's my closest friend from medical school, and he's currently the head of corporate compliance for the hospital board. Julian... this is Erin. And that is Leslie."

Julian looked at Leslie sleeping on the bed, then at me, and finally at Conrad. "Holy mother of God, Conrad... she looks just like you. It's not even a question."

"My mother knows," Conrad said coldly. "She was here two hours ago. She threatened to strip my license and launch a smear campaign against Erin."

Julian swore under his breath, leaning against the wall. "She's already moving, Conrad. I checked the internal server twenty minutes ago. Deborah's personal legal team has already filed an emergency petition with the county family court."

My heart slammed against my ribs. "A petition for what?!"

Julian looked at me with deep sympathy. "An emergency motion for temporary protective custody. She's claiming that you are an unfit mother who brought a critically ill child to an emergency room while under the influence of financial distress, and that the Finnegan family is seeking immediate custody to provide adequate medical protection."

"She's trying to steal my daughter!" I screamed, standing up so fast my chair tipped over.

"Over my dead body," Conrad roared, grabbing Julian by his collar. "Stop that filing, Julian!"

"I can't stop a court filing, Conrad!" Julian pleaded, raising his hands. "She has three senior partners from the biggest family law firm in Florida on her payroll! They are going to serve Erin with the court summons before noon today!"

I looked at Leslie sleeping peacefully on the bed, completely unaware that a billionaire dragon was flexing her claws to tear her away from the only mother she had ever known.

I felt the panic rising like a dark tide, threatening to drown me. But then I looked at Conrad. I saw the fierce, unyielding protection in his eyes.

The man I loved hadn't abandoned me. He had been a prisoner of his mother's lies just like I had been a prisoner of her cruelty.

"Then we fight," I said, my voice dropping into a deep, unwavering calm that surprised even myself. "We do a DNA test right now. Today. And we go to that court together."
