Chapter 4 - The DNA Revelation

By 8:00 a.m., the legal war had officially begun.
Julian arranged for an expedited, double-blind paternity test using an independent lab outside the Finnegan hospital system to ensure Deborah couldn't tamper with the results.
A gentle lab technician took cheek swabs from both Conrad and Leslie in the private VIP room.
"Results will be ready in four hours," Julian confirmed, locking the sealed samples inside a biohazard transport briefcase. "I'm carrying these to the state lab myself. I won't let Deborah's people anywhere near them."
"Thank you, Julian," Conrad said, shaking his friend's hand firmly.
As soon as Julian left, the door opened again. This time, it wasn't Deborah.
A striking woman in her early thirties walked into the room. She wore an expensive white designer suit, red lipstick, and carried an Hermès leather handbag. Her eyes were sharp, intelligent, and filled with deep frustration.
Julianna Vance. Conrad's fiancée.
I instantly stood up, my guard rising.
Conrad stepped between us, holding his arm out defensively. "Julianna... you shouldn't be here."
Julianna looked at Conrad, then at me, and finally at Leslie, who was sitting up in bed drinking a small juice box.
"So it's true," Julianna said softly, her rich voice surprisingly free of anger, carrying only a heavy, weary resignation. "Your mother called my father at five this morning. She told him you had a mental breakdown in the ER and were being manipulated by an old girlfriend."
"It wasn't a breakdown, Julianna," Conrad said firmly. "Erin is the woman I loved before the accident. The woman my mother lied to me about. And that little girl is my daughter."
Julianna walked slowly to the edge of the bed. She looked down at Leslie, who offered her a sweet, innocent smile through her juice straw.
Julianna let out a long, sighing breath and sat down in the visitor's armchair.
"I knew you didn't love me, Conrad," Julianna said quietly, looking up at him. "We were a business arrangement. My father wanted your family's hospital network, and your mother wanted my family's research funding. We went to dinner twice a month and talked about surgical protocols."
Conrad softened his posture. "Julianna... I'm sorry. I never meant to humiliate you."
"I'm not humiliated, Conrad," Julianna countered, her eyes flashing with sudden intensity. "I'm disgusted."
I blinked, taken aback. "Disgusted?"
Julianna turned to look at me. "Your name is Erin, right?"
"Yes," I replied carefully.
"Deborah Finnegan came to my father's office three years ago," Julianna revealed, dropping a bombshell into the room. "She asked my father to use his influence on the state medical board to keep Conrad's clinical records classified under top-secret status after his coma recovery. She didn't want anyone looking into the neurological rehabilitation facility where he was kept."
Conrad frowned deeply. "Why would she hide my rehab records?"
"Because you didn't just have physical trauma after the crash, Conrad," Julianna said, looking directly into his eyes. "You had retrograde amnesia covering the six months prior to the accident. You forgot Erin because of the brain swelling!"
Conrad froze. The room seemed to lose all sound.
"My mother... knew I had amnesia?" Conrad whispered, his face turning ghostly white.
"She knew," Julianna confirmed grimly. "And instead of helping you remember, she systematically removed every photo, every letter, every trace of Erin from your apartment while you were unconscious. She hired a team to scrub your personal drive. When you woke up, you asked about the gap in your memory, and she filled it with lies. She told you that you were single, overworked, and recovering from a solo car crash."
Tears of absolute horror welled in Conrad's eyes. He pressed his hands against his face, a low groan of unimaginable betrayal tearing from his throat.
They hadn't just lied to me. They had erased me from his mind while he lay helpless in a hospital bed.
"Why are you telling us this, Julianna?" I asked, stepping forward, deeply moved by her courage. "If you tell this to the court, your father's merger with the Finnegan family collapses."
Julianna stood up, adjusting her expensive jacket with supreme dignity.
"My father can find another hospital network to partner with," Julianna said with a cold, triumphant smile. "I became a surgeon to save lives, Miss Hayes. Not to help a psychotic matriarch steal a child from her mother. I’m canceling my engagement with Conrad effective immediately, and I’ve already agreed to testify as a character witness on your behalf at the emergency custody hearing this afternoon."
I stared at her in utter disbelief, a sudden surge of profound gratitude overflowing in my heart.

"Thank you," I whispered.
Julianna offered me a genuine, warm smile. "Give Deborah hell, Erin. She deserves every bit of it."
