Chapter 6 - The Unraveling of Deborah

The tension inside Courtroom 402 was so thick it was nearly unbearable.

Julian Ross stepped up to the bench, placing two sealed official documents directly before Judge Thomas.

"Your Honor," Julian stated clearly. "Exhibit A is the official certified result of an expedited DNA paternity test performed by the Florida Department of Law Enforcement Laboratory three hours ago. The test confirms a 99.99% probability that Dr. Conrad Finnegan is the biological father of Leslie Hayes."

Judge Thomas reviewed the lab report, nodding slowly. "The court recognizes Dr. Finnegan as the legal father."

"And Exhibit B, Your Honor," Julian continued, gesturing to Julianna Vance, "is a sworn affidavit from Dr. Julianna Vance, along with subpoenaed neurological rehabilitation logs from 2021. They prove beyond a shadow of a doubt that Mrs. Deborah Finnegan intentionally concealed Dr. Finnegan’s amnesia, altered hospital access records, and bribed medical personnel to prevent Miss Hayes from contacting her son while he was incapacitated!"

Deborah’s lead attorney frantically leaned toward her. "Mrs. Finnegan... did you authorize alterations on hospital server logs?"

Deborah remained frozen, her gloved hands gripping her silver cane so tightly her knuckles turned white beneath the fabric.

Judge Thomas turned her stern gaze directly onto Deborah Finnegan.

"Mrs. Finnegan," the judge said, her voice dropping into a deep tone of absolute condemnation. "Is this true?"

"Your Honor," Harrison interjected frantically, "my client was acting in what she believed to be the best psychiatric interest of her son—"

"I asked Mrs. Finnegan!" Judge Thomas barked, slamming her gavel down with a crack that echoed like a gunshot. "Did you intentionally conceal the existence of this child and forge medical privacy classifications to separate a father from his newborn daughter?!"

Deborah slowly stood up. Her aristocratic posture finally crumpled, revealing an ugly, arrogant spite.

"That girl was nothing!" Deborah shrieked, dropping all pretense of high-society decorum. "She was a nobody from a trailer town! She had no right to carry the Finnegan bloodline! Conrad belonged in the upper echelons of medicine, not changing diapers in a tenement building!"

The courtroom gasped. The reporters in the back gallery began writing furiously.

Judge Thomas looked at Deborah with profound disgust.

"Mrs. Finnegan," Judge Thomas said coldly. "You have abused the emergency court system, committed perjury, and engaged in malicious prosecution against a fit, loving mother. Not only is your petition for temporary custody DENIED with prejudice, but I am also issuing an immediate, permanent restraining order against you."

Deborah gasped. "You cannot keep me from my grandchild!"

"I am ordering you to stay at least one thousand feet away from Leslie Hayes, Erin Hayes, and Dr. Conrad Finnegan at all times," Judge Thomas declared sharply. "Furthermore, I am referring your actions regarding the alteration of medical server logs to the District Attorney's office for criminal investigation into corporate fraud and obstruction of justice!"

Crack!

The gavel struck the wooden block.

"Court is adjourned!"

Deborah collapsed back into her leather chair, her lawyers surrounding her in a panic as federal marshals stepped forward to inform her of the impending criminal investigation.

I dropped my head onto Conrad's shoulder, weeping tears of pure, overwhelming relief. Leslie wrapped her tiny arms around both of our necks, holding us tightly.

Conrad held us both, kissing my temple, his tears wetting my hair. "It's over, Erin. It's finally over. She can never hurt us again."
