Chapter 9 - The Garden Wedding

Six months later, the sun shone softly over a private botanical garden in Key Biscayne.
The air was filled with the sweet fragrance of white roses, orchids, and the gentle rustle of palm trees swaying in the ocean breeze.
Fifty of our closest friends, colleagues, and family members gathered beneath a canopy of blooming white vines overlooking the turquoise waters of the Atlantic Ocean.
Julian Ross stood near the altar as Conrad’s best man. Julianna Vance stood on my side as my maid of honor, having become one of my closest, most trusted friends over the past year.
The harpist began to play a soft, breathtaking rendition of "Can't Help Falling in Love."
The crowd stood up.
First came Leslie—our beautiful five-year-old flower girl—wearing a miniature white lace dress, wearing a crown of baby's breath flowers, tossing pink rose petals down the aisle with a radiant, beaming smile.
And then, I walked down the aisle.
I wore a floor-length, off-the-shoulder silk wedding dress with intricate pearl embroidery along the train. My father—looking proud, healthy, and handsome in a dark tuxedo—walked beside me, holding my arm tightly.
At the end of the aisle stood Conrad.
He looked so devastatingly handsome in his black tuxedo that my breath caught in my throat. Tears glinted in his hazel eyes as he watched me approach, his smile so full of pure, radiant love that everything else in the world faded into background noise.
My father gently placed my hand into Conrad's. "Take care of my girl, son."
"With my life, sir," Conrad promised deeply.
We turned to face each other beneath the canopy of white roses.
"Conrad," I said, my voice clear and trembling with sweet emotion as I read my vows. "Five years ago, I thought I lost you forever. I lived in a world without light, holding onto a photograph to remember what love felt like. But you proved to me that real love never truly dies. It waits for us. It fights for us. You returned to me, and you gave our daughter her father back. I promise to love you, honor you, and walk beside you through every storm for the rest of my days."
Conrad held my hands, his thumb gently wiping a tear from my cheek as he spoke his vows.
"Erin," Conrad said, his voice deep and echoing with absolute conviction. "When I woke up five years ago, my body was alive, but my heart was asleep. The moment you walked into my ER that night with our daughter, my soul remembered what it was living for. You are my home, Erin. You and Leslie are my reason for breathing. I promise to protect you, cherish you, and hold you close until my very last breath."
"By the power vested in me by the State of Florida," the officiant declared with a warm smile, "I now pronounce you husband and wife! Conrad, you may kiss your bride!"
Conrad pulled me into his arms, dipping me back slightly as he pressed his lips to mine in a deep, passionate, breathtaking kiss that made the entire crowd burst into joyful, roaring cheers.
Leslie ran up to us, throwing her arms around our legs, laughing joyfully.
"We did it, Mommy! We're a real family now!" she cheered.

Conrad scooped Leslie up into his left arm while keeping his right arm wrapped securely around my waist, kissing her forehead.
"We were always a real family, baby girl," Conrad smiled brightly. "Now we just made it forever."
