Chapter 3 - THE DEEPENING INVESTIGATION

By sunrise, the majestic chateau of Sterling Manor was reduced to a smoldering shell of stone, ash, and twisted iron.

While Richard Sterling used his vast financial influence to move the remaining family into a private five-star hotel in Newport, Clara refused to leave Leo's side. She accompanied the boy to Rhode Island General Hospital, where he was admitted for minor smoke inhalation and routine observation.

In the quiet of the private hospital room, Clara sat beside Leo’s bed, gently wiping his face with a warm washcloth.

"Clara?" Leo asked softly, looking at the small wooden box sitting on his bedside table.

"Yes, sweetheart?"

"Why do they hate me so much?"

The question hung in the quiet room, breaking Clara's heart into a million pieces. She set the washcloth down and took his small hand into hers.

"They don't hate you because of who you are, Leo," Clara said gently. "They hate you because of what you represent to them. You are your father's true heir. And as long as you are alive, they cannot truly control the Sterling estate."

A soft knock at the door interrupted them.

A tall man in his late fifties with silver-streaked hair, wearing a sharp grey suit, stepped into the room. He carried a heavy leather briefcase and radiated an air of quiet, immovable authority.

"Clara Hayes?" the man asked.

"Yes," Clara stood up defensively, moving slightly between the stranger and Leo's bed. "Who are you?"

"My name is Thomas Vance," the man said, pulling out a silver-embossed business card. "I am a senior partner at Sterling, Vance & Associates, and for fifteen years, I was Arthur Sterling's personal legal counsel and trustee."

Leo looked up. "You knew my dad?"

"I did, Leo," Vance’s tone softened as he looked at the boy. "Your father was a brilliant, compassionate man who saw the corruption inside his family long before anyone else did. And three days before his tragic helicopter accident six years ago, Arthur placed a sealed legal directive in my private vault."

Clara’s eyes narrowed slightly. "A directive regarding what?"

"Regarding Leo's full inheritance," Vance revealed, laying a thick manila folder on the bedside tray. "And regarding the true circumstances of Arthur’s death."

Clara’s breath caught in her throat. "What are you saying, Mr. Vance?"

"I’m saying, Miss Hayes," Vance said coldly, "that Arthur Sterling’s helicopter crash was never an accident. And last night's fire was the second time the Sterling family attempted to eliminate Arthur's bloodline."
