Chapter 4 - THE WILL OF ARTHUR STERLING

In the high-rise offices of Sterling, Vance & Associates in downtown Providence, the air was suffocatingly tense.

Richard Sterling sat at the head of the conference table, surrounded by three high-priced corporate defense attorneys. Beside him sat Eleanor, wearing oversized dark sunglasses, fidgeting nervously with her pearl necklace.

On the other side of the table sat Clara, dressed in a neat dark blazer, with eleven-year-old Leo sitting beside her in a brand-new mechanical wheelchair provided by Attorney Vance.

Attorney Thomas Vance adjusted his wire-rimmed glasses and opened the red wax seal on a thick parchment document.

"We are gathered today for the formal reading of the Primary Trust Directive of Arthur Richard Sterling," Vance announced, his voice echoing clearly off the glass walls.

"This is ridiculous!" Richard scoffed, slamming his hand onto the table. "Arthur died six years ago! His estate was fully integrated into the master corporate holding fund under my leadership as patriarch!"

"Correction, Richard," Attorney Vance replied smoothly, without looking up. "You were appointed as temporary administrator of the operational dividend accounts. However, under Clause 9 of Arthur’s will, the primary trust—which holds fifty-one percent of the voting shares in Sterling Oil & Global Logistics—was placed on a legal hold until Leo turned twelve years old."

Eleanor gripped her leather purse tighter. "Leo is eleven!"

"Leo turns twelve in six weeks, Eleanor," Vance said, turning a page. "And Arthur’s directive states that upon Leo’s twelfth birthday, the entire estate, including the Rhode Island property, the corporate voting shares, and the family trusts valued at $4.2 billion, transfers exclusively to Leo."

Richard’s face went purple with rage. "He is a crippled child! He cannot run an international corporation! He is incapable of managing his own life!"

"Arthur anticipated you would say that, Richard," Vance said with a small, dangerous smile.

He pulled out a secondary legal document.

"Clause 12 states: In the event that Arthur Sterling suffers an untimely death, and should there be any evidence of foul play, neglect, or harm directed toward his heir, full legal guardianship of Leo Sterling, along with executive proxy voting rights over the corporate shares, shall immediately be assigned to an independent guardian designated by Arthur."

Eleanor let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "Independent guardian?! Who?! You?!"

"No, Eleanor," Vance said, looking across the table directly at the housekeeper sitting beside the boy. "Arthur designated Miss Clara Hayes."

The entire conference room erupted.

"What?!" Richard screamed, jumping out of his chair. "A housekeeper?! You are assigning a four-billion-dollar corporate empire to a maid?!"

"Clara Hayes was chosen by Arthur because she was the only person in that fortress who treated his son with basic human dignity," Vance stated firmly, slamming his hand onto the table to silence the corporate attorneys. "And as of 9:00 AM today, Miss Hayes has officially accepted the role of primary legal guardian of Leo Sterling."

Clara looked down at Leo, who reached out and squeezed her hand tightly. For the first time in his life, the little boy did not look terrified.

"And there is one more thing, Richard," Vance added, pulling a thumb drive from his pocket. "The local police and the ATF have officially opened a joint arson and attempted murder investigation into the fire at Sterling Manor. The cloud server files saved from Leo’s room have been handed over to the District Attorney."

Richard slumped back into his chair, the color completely draining from his face, as the fortress of power he had spent decades building began to crumble around him.
