Chapter 5 - THE SAFE HOUSE

With the legal battle officially declared, Clara knew that staying in Rhode Island hotels was no longer safe. The Sterlings were desperate, and desperate people with billions of dollars were capable of extraordinary violence.

Using funds authorized by Attorney Vance from Leo’s trust, Clara relocated Leo to a secure, private oceanfront estate in Mystic, Connecticut.

The property was surrounded by tall stone walls, gated security, and monitored twenty-four hours a day by a private security team hired by Vance.

For the first week, Leo spent his days in the sunlit conservatory of the new house, painting watercolors and reading classic adventure novels.

For eleven years, he had been treated like a secret to be hidden away in a dark room. Now, he could sit on the porch, feel the warm sea breeze against his face, and listen to the birds without hearing Aunt Eleanor’s sharp, critical voice telling him to stop making noise.

One evening, while Clara was preparing dinner in the spacious kitchen, Leo wheeled himself into the room, holding the small wooden box he had saved from the burning chateau.

"Clara?" Leo asked softly.

"Yes, honey?" Clara wiped her hands on an apron and knelt beside his chair.

"I think it’s time we open this," Leo said, setting the box on his lap. "My dad told me to keep it locked until I felt safe. I never felt safe at Sterling Manor."

Clara’s heart warmed. "Are you ready now?"

Leo nodded firmly. He pulled a small brass key that he wore on a silver chain around his neck and inserted it into the keyhole of the wooden box.

The brass latch clicked open.

Inside the box were not expensive jewels or gold coins.

Inside were three items: an old leather-bound journal written in Arthur’s handwriting, a micro-cassette recorder, and a sealed manila envelope labeled: FOR THE AUTHORITIES - IN CASE OF MY DEATH.

Clara gently pulled out the cassette recorder and pressed the play button.

A static hiss filled the quiet kitchen, followed by the deep, warm, familiar voice of Arthur Sterling.

"If you are listening to this tape, it means my suspicions were correct, and I am no longer here to protect my son. Richard and Eleanor have discovered that I intend to divide the oil conglomerate into a public charitable foundation upon Leo’s twelfth birthday.

They have been tampering with my flight equipment. My chief mechanic, Miller, confirmed that the primary hydraulic lines on my helicopter were intentionally weakened. If anything happens to me, know this: Eleanor and Richard will stop at nothing to secure the corporate shares. Protect my boy, Clara. You are the only one who truly sees him."

The recording clicked off.

Clara sat on the floor, holding her breath, tears burning her eyes.

Arthur hadn't died in a tragic accident. He had been murdered by his own father and sister. And for six years, Leo had been living under the roof of the very monsters who had killed his father.

Leo looked at Clara, his small lips trembling, but his eyes burning with an incredible, adult clarity.

"They killed my dad," Leo whispered.

"Yes, sweetheart," Clara said, reaching out to wrap her arms around him tightly. "They did. But they are not going to get away with it. I promise you on my life."
